Dr. Gary Scott Gruen, MD

I saw Dr. Gruen many years ago; he treated a leg which had been badly broken. I saw him recently and was thrilled that he had not changed--he is most thorough, patient, understanding, and insightful. In every way, Dr. Gruen excels!

A few years ago, I stepped - jumped off of the back bumper of my box truck, one foot landed on a parking bumper that I hadnt seen and after trying to catch my balance I went down hard onto the asphalt. Paramedics, fireman and Morophine IV and I was on my way to UPMC Presby. Dr. Gruen put me back together - shattered hip and femur. EXCELLENT care, EXCELLENT Doctor and staff . 2 weeks in hospital and 4 weeks in a rehab to learn to walk again. Fortunately a few years later and I don't even realize what had happeneed. Dr, Gruen is the best. At a follow up visit I asked him what all he does, he told me "If you break it, I can fix it " I beleive him !!

28 years ago on Good Friday I shattered my heal ( calcanous) it was bad very bad. Gary was my surgeon what a job he did. I still have pain 24/7 but I walk and no pain meds, 9 moths of bio-feedback at UPMC saved my life..! Thank You and Blessing for what you did for me

Had calcaneal fractures of both feet. Dr. Gruen came to me in hospital every day for a week and wanted me to tell him to do surgery. He kept saying he was not going to make the decision to do surgery. He never even explained what a calcaneal fracture was to me. He said surgery would maybe only fix my feet by 20% at best. He said he would probably not get the surgery. I now find out thru researching the injury that it is highly recommended to have the heal reconstruction within the first 5 days to allow for much better outcome for walking and far less pain. Other surgeons I have been to all agreed he should have done the heel reconstruction immediately. Now I will not walk normal without pain ever. Even after several surgeries to fuse both feet. I would never recommend Dr. Gruen to anyone.

Dr. Gruen repaired a badly broken right femur which was broken due to taking Fosamax/Boniva to prevent osteoporosis. I met him in emergency surgery as my femur just snapped under body weight in my own yard. I lost 2 pints of blood internally, but now that leg is healed well, thanks to Dr. Gruen's expertise with broken bones. He is tops in my opinion, and is very caring - determined to find out how to best heal our broken bones.

My experience with Dr. Gruen was as amazing as it could be for a broken bone. I suffered a very severe ankle fracture. He performed emergency surgery and a few months later, everything is now healed 100%. My physical therapist told me I am lucky to even have a working foot and here, I have one that is almost like nothing happened. Scars are minimal. He is a very smart doctor and very kind. Bsure to come prepared with your own questions if there is something you'd like to know. Because of the emergency situation of my injury, I did not choose Dr. Gruen myself, but if I had to do this all over again I would do whatever it took to ensure I'd be under his care.

So thankful for this skilled surgeon.

I injured my foot at work.not only did he let the injury heal wrong which cause nerve damage he gave me a shot of novacaine and told me I was cured.he also told me there was nothing more he could do for me yet my current doctor not only halfway fixed my foot problem(I'll always have problems) he gave me othropedics that helped my back.

Just wanted to say by far the best doctor I have ever had. So personal,caring,excellent in shattered femors. He is the reason im walking today. His staff is the best all the way around. I even have a cd of all the xrays from beginning to end. Thank you again so much for doing such a great job on my leg,which was badly amaged by my fall..
