He was 100% certain my son would be born with spina bifida based on an ultrasound, There was no doubt in his mind. He said he saw a fluid filled sac on the lumbar spine. He was unsure of the severity of his condition, but knew it was present. He told me he knew someone born with spina bifida & had issues going to the bathroom, walking, & was made fun of while growing up. Knowing this, I was unsure if I wanted to continue with my pregnancy. He recommended that I go to Boston Children's for an MRI to know the severity. I was unsure if I would want to do this considering I wasn't sure if I was going to continue my pregnancy knowing there was 100% chance he had spina bifida. He diagnosed my son before seeing any MRI or the results from my amniocentesis. After going to Boston, my son was completely fine, No spina bifida. After asking him to review his mistake he said “I guess it was a fatty sac on the spine” To think I trusted this doctor & considered ending my pregnancy because of him.

We were referred to Dr Kaufman with a complicated high risk pregnancy. He and his staff were unbelievably compassionate in dealing with us through a very difficult time. His skill in treatments was amazing, and he even provided his personal number for us to contact him outside business hours if needed. Though we would have wished it to be under different circumstances, my husband and I are forever grateful for the time we were in his care.
