Dr. Maxfield grew up in Lowell, Massachusetts and attended Northeastern University where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmacy in 1975. He received his doctoral D.M.D. degree in 1979 from the prominent University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine. After 9 years of active duty in the U.S. Army as a general dentist, Dr. Maxfield returned to civilian life and completed a residency in periodontology at the prestigious Harvard university of Dental Medicine in 1990.
