NP Lerma began his nursing career in a Physical Rehabilitation unit at McAllen Medical Center in McAllen Texas. While working as a registered nurse, he became extremely passionate about health promotion and prevention. In San Antonio his focus changed to cardiac nursing where he worked for 13 years at Southwest Texas Methodist Hospital. His passion for medicine grew and he decided to focus his energy on becoming a family nurse practitioner, with a goal to help patients manage chronic diseases using prevention and empowerment while practicing evidence-based medicine. Since becoming a nurse practitioner, he feels more fulfilled with his career and has garnered a broader view of his patients' healthcare needs and goals. NP Lerma believes that comprehensive health management encompasses the benefits of prevention, patient empowerment and lifelong learning in the patient-provider relationship.
