Dr. Gerhard Emil Maale III, MD

I will never visit Dr. G. Maale again. Today I waited 1 hour and 20 minutes in the waiting area before I was put back in an office. At no time did any of his staff inform me he was running so late. After 1 hour and watching others go back who had arrived after me I asked the receptionist if I was still on the list. She said I was next and said he was late because he had rounds. She then turned away. Dr. Maale immediately saw me but my appointment lasted less than 5 minutes. He reviewed some bone scans created a recording of his review. Said I was fine and he would see me in 3 months. When I said something about waiting an hour and 20 minutes he said "Sorry", smiled and turned away. His office staff was even less empathetic. They all said "I'm sorry" and then walked away. When I challenged why they would schedule appointments when he had rounds a woman with light brown hair became indignant and walked away. They are all very disrespectful of patients' time. All they had to do was to… communicate how late he was running and show more empathy to screwing up my day. I know sometimes doctors run late, however other offices are more empathetic and offer a greater explanation than "he had rounds" and then walk away. That's no excuse! You can plan and schedule around his scheduled rounds!

Our 28 year old son had a box fall on his leg. His leg only seemed to be getting worst. After an MRI they discovered a mass/tumor on his femur and hip. While shopping at the mall trying on clothes his leg broke. Rushed to the ER they discovered it was cancer. The doctors said there is only one Doctor in this area who can even help you is Dr. Maale. Dr.Maale looked at the fracture and told them to get him over to him ASAP. We were so blessed and fortunate that he took our son as a patient. He did an extensive biopsy of the cancer as there was a mass also in the lung. He wanted to make sure we weren't dealing with 2 different types of cancer. Yes, as parents we had questions, but Dr. Maale only cared about my son and his treatment. Dr. Maale always told my son his next plan of action. My son trusted him and trusted every word he said. Yes, he was scared but he knew we had the best of the best. Even the nurses would say to my son that we were very fortunate to have him as… our doctor. People from all over the world would come to see him. After Dr Maale would visit and talk to my son and leave the room, his assistant was there to answer any questions for as long as we needed. She would answer until we all understood. Dr. Maale always gave him encouragement to do his therapy so he could get to go home. Dr. Maale had a team of specialist and had meetings about my son everyday. That was amazing to us.

I had a total hip replacement done by Dr Maale almost 4 years ago - I am only 35 years old. On Monday I will go in to have the hip taken out because of an infection that has been present in the joint for a while. My new Dr has described what is happening to my hip as a slow moving car crash that he can see through the years of imaging. After the surgery I had chronic pain. Maale brushed it off saying I was structurally fine. My hip dislocated 1 year post op. This is very very rare. Then I found out I had nerve damage to my obterator nerve. This is from the cement that Maale used to cement the joint in my hip. Again, something that is very rare. Now I am faced with another hip replacement a mere 4 years after the first one because the cup has come loose and I had an infection that may have been there from the time of the first surgery. I trusted Dr Maale with my life and mobility. His bedside manner was awful and I was afraid to talk to him about anything. I stuck around because I was… told he was the best. I caution everyone to thoroughly research Maale or any Dr and make sure you make the best decisions about your care. Advocate for yourself and do not be afraid of 2nd and 3rd opinions. I am left with a mess of a hip and will most likely never have full mobility because of the first surgery. I am sure he has done great things for some of his patients, but I still urge you to research before going forward with surgery.

My dad was diagnosed with an aggressive cancer from Dr. Maale. Unfortunately Dr. Maale was unable to discuss the results in layman a terms and even though my dad was 86 put us on a chase to go through extensive and painful treatment. My dad survived 2 months after diagnosis. Dr. Maale was too arrogant to suggest pallative care. This robbed my family of quality time and goodbyes we were too busy chasing a cure we never knew that dad was dying.

After 16 months and multiple trips to various doctors A co-worker recommended Dr Maale. The office staff was friendly and quick to get me an appointment. The first meeting Dr Maale was able to give me a diagnose within a few minutes of speaking with him. I was sent for several tests to confirm the diagnoses. He performed the surgery and I'm on the road to recovery. Before finding out about Dr Maale I had been to the Mayo Clinic. They wanted to amputate my leg within minutes of our conversation. I can't thank Dr Maale enough for saving my leg.

Dr. Maale is a brilliant surgeon and did an excellent job on the knee revision. He is knowledgeable and concientous. But he is always in a hurry and I usually leave thinking,,I meant to ask him something but he was in and out so quickly that there was no time, He is all business!

he has treated me since 89 and has done a wonderful job on me he did both of my knee replacements and hip replacements among other surgeries of bone tumor removals.

I had a total knee operation some time back. A serious mistake was made during the operation. I recovered but am left with a serious problem. I tried to see him to talk about it and see what my options were. He denied that it occurred. He said, the Xrays say you are fine. I said just look at me, anyone can see I'm not fixed. He said, The xrays say you are fine so your fine and walked out, both times I came to talk with him. There was no yelling I just wanted to know what happened and what to do. I saw other Orthopedic Drs., all apologized for my problem. Both said he must have been in too big a hurry at the end of the day. One said, I can see no other explanation other than he forgot. I only wanted him to explain to me what happened and what I should do. He is very rude. I think he feels he can treat patients however he pleases because of the Texas State Tort Reform Laws. It is very hard to sue a Dr. in Texas, if you are retired, disabled, or otherwise not working. … Lawyers say if they can't add loss of wages to their formula, its not worth it to them to sue. It is to me, I'm left with a permanent disability, but that doesn't matter to them. When Lawyers can't and don't police our Drs. then no one does! They darn sure don't police themselves. ,,Then Drs. like Dr Maale can treat you how they will, mistakes and all, and are not worried about the consequences. I'm sure he has his good days as evidenced by some of the other comments here. But he has some very bad days too and those are the ones you have to worry about. So, if you're a Gambler,... well then.. Good Luck.

Dr. Maale studies each case before he accepts each patient. When he accepted me, I was so sick! MRSA had invaded my right knee replacement. I figured he would recommend surgery right away. He got an infection specialist on board to get the infection localized to the metal only, and I felt much better. He did a one stage revision with the most amazing knee. It will not dislocate! I should know. It has turned 180 degrees and my husband had to put it back. I am out living life again! I am doing Zumba, yogalates, preparing to walk a 5 K, did a fitness Bootcamp, and am going to try spin class next. I am swimming for time and working out 5 days a week! I weighed 435 pounds at one point, now I am down to 263.2 and going down! I love living and being active again! I changed the way I eat and I feel like a million bucks! Thank you Dr. Maale! You are one in a million!!!
