Dr. Gillis Lavelle Payne JR., MD

Dr Payne is one of the best doctors I have ever had the pleasure to meet. He takes time to answer his personal phone on weekends and holidays and really takes time with his patients and gives the parents thorough information. 5 stars Dr Payne

Dr. Payne is pretty set in his ways if you will. He was my mothers dr when she was little. He doesnt have the best bedside manner and doesnt take much time to listen and discuss concerns with the parent. He is very matter of fact and makes me feel as if my concerns are not important. For example, I questioned the chicken pox vaccine and he didnt explain to me why there is a need for this vaccine now when this was a normal childhood illness when I was growing up, but informed me that if I didnt want to vaccinate my child then I would need to find a new doctor. I havent been back since, I am not against vaccinating, but I am also not for injecting my children with any and everything some dr tells me I should without knowing why, what is in it and the risks vs benefits of each one. He also wanted me to give my exclusively breastfed newborn a couple of ounces of water daily. If you know anything about breastfeeding a newborn or infant then you know that they get everything they need from… the breastmilk and giving them water will effect the mothers milk supply and potentially harm the nursing regiment. It takes the place of vital vitamins and antibodies that are made specially for each individual baby by their mother. When I informed the Lactation Nurse at Baptist East that he was telling new breastfeeding mothers to give their babies water, she flipped her lid and called his office and corrected them. They changed the information on their handouts afterward to match what the Lactation Nurse said was correct. That was in 2007. I should have known then that I needed to seek out a new doctor. His nurses and staff are awesome though! :) I do like Dr Payne as a person, Ive taken my kids to him long enough to learn his personality but Im still not happy with his medical advice all the time. And lastly, like a couple others have said, he never knows my childs name and usually calls him by his first name even though thats not the name we use and his name that we do use is clearly on his chart in quotations. I usually have to correct him at least once. Sometimes more.

Excellent doctor! I have tried many in Montgomery and have be less than pleased with them all except for doctor Payne. He is excellent and very thorough in all his diagnostics. His staff is very nice and I have a pleasant experience at every doctors visit.

Dr. Payne has terrible bedside manner. He never knew my child's name, in fact in the middle of several visits began calling my child by a different name even though I corrected him. He is condescending and arrogant. I would not recommend Dr. Payne to anyone.

Being first in the office in the morning, you'd think that your appointment should be fast. Not so with this doctor. After waiting 30 minutes, he comes in and reads my child's name off the chart EVERY time, and then proceeds to comment about how he has a family member with the same name as my son, every single visit. I get that doctors see a lot of patients, but at least read the chart before you walk in the door! After receiving emergency medical care at the hospital, Dr. Payne had the nerve to lecture me about why I should have called him instead... Mind you it was on a weekend when we went. Terrible, old fashioned doctor, out of touch with patients, do NOT recommend.

Dr. Payne was my physician when I was little girl. I chose Dr. Payne as my children doctor because I know he was a very good doctor to me and my brothers. He's very patient and caring. Always on duty. He's always there when I need him.

Dr. Payne is the very best! He always follows up and has an accurate diagnosis. He has an amazing memory! I highly recommend him. He is very understanding and professional.
