Dr. Giuseppe Barbesino, MD

Was referred to by my endocrinologist after having surgery and biopsy of thyroid came back with the BRAF mututation. Instead of having to go to Boston for my "conference" appointment Dr. Barbesino met me in Danvers at North Shore Med Center. Once he had my file, he immediately put a treatment protocol in place. This included the bloodwork, tracer dose of radioactive iodine, full body scan, treatment dose, and again full body scan. On the patient portal he responds. When my tg level was through the roof, he immediately had me do an ultrasound in the office area and found additional lymph nodes that were not picked up in the initial one I had in October. I find him to be caring, knowledgable and feel that I could not be going to anyone better. Instead of me having to go back to Boston for a scheduled ultrasound, he asked Greg to help get one booked in just several days so I did not have to make another trip to Boston. I am feeling very encouraged that I am at the right… place...with the right person. I have found him to be caring, personable, and have a sense of humor. He may be direct in his communication but honestly, when you are dealing with cancer I only care about the competency of the doctor. If my endo up in the Merrimack Valley recommended and referred me to him I trust she knows why she has sent me to him. I will continue to feel encouraged that we will get a handle on my situation and that this will have a good outcome.

I've seen Dr. Barbesino for about 6 years now. After he found a cancerous growth on my thyroid, he operated on me and explained everything. I follow up with him now every year. I find him to be friendly and professional. In fact at one of my first office visits he asked my age and didn't believe me said I looked to young for that age. Now that is an ongoing joke between my husband and I. He has a strong Italian accent so he might be hard to understand sometimes but I think he's charming. I have and would recommend him.

He is arrogant and condescending. And, he missed a diagnosis for hyperthyroidism which my primary care caught by a simple blood test.

First, I went in for thyroid issues and he discovered an enlarged parathyroid gland that had appeared on a previous MRI, but was omitted in the report! This is why we who live in the medical-competency center of the universe are so lucky. Second, he was charming! I was prepared, after reading some of these reviews, for "rude and abrupt", but he was very amiable and responsive, both to my patient-style (involved and opinionated) and to humorous bantering. As for my questions, he took the time to point out the objects on the sonar screen, and he explained IN FULL everything that could possibly go wrong -- both with getting the treatment and with not getting the treatment. He was prompt, efficient, respectful, and obviously competent. And he arranged for follow-up the following day at my convenience.

I have been seeing Dr. Barbesino for a little over two years after being diagnosed with a nodule in my neck, which was beign. I am not on medication at this time. He is very competent, the top of his field, but not very friendly. No bedside manner, which I feel I need. I will be seeing him again shortly for another check-up. I have a few questions for hiim regarding my thyroid condiiton. I hope he can and will answer my questions.

Worst doctor ever....rude, arrogant and disrespectful. I went to this doctor as a referral from my surgeon. I'm sure he is good at what he does, but if you are looking for relationship with this doctor BEWARE that you are just another number to him.

I went to Dr.Barbesino after reading some of the good reviews from this site. At the time, I really needed the help from a doctor that could help diagnose my thyroid condition and put me on a treatment plan. My first impression was that he was cold, arrogant and unapproachable. That said, he did a good job laying out the various treatment options and pros and cons of each treament plan. He put me on some medicine that has helped. My issue was with the ongoing care. Even though he calls me back right away in regard to lab results or any questions that I had, I found that he did not like to explain or was not prepared to explain the results. If you are the kind of patient who is happy to go along without asking questions, you will probably be fine, but if you are not like this and would like to know more and ask "why", Dr. Barbesino is probably not right for you. He seems to become easily aggitated and offended if asked about the treatment plan. My most recent encounter with him left me… in tears when all I wanted was to understand my lab results and future treatmen plan better. He was impatient, rude and more or less hung up on me. I was so disappointed and upset that I'm currently looking to switch doctors.

I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer and had my thyroid removed last February.The Dr started me on a low dose of my meds. After a couple of months I had my blood work done and he upped my meds. I was finally feeling good. My nails starting growing my skin and hair looked good, I wasnt tired anymore. well I went in for my 3 month blood work and he called me and said my TSH level was too high and he lowered my meds. I even questioned him saying I was feeling good again.Well that was 6 months ago. Of course Ive been feeling lousy, tired, gaining weight my nails are peeling again and thats been going on for a couple of months now.I called to make an appointment and after being put on hold for 25 minutes I finally got thru and was told to hold again... I refused and when I told the receptionist I wanted to see the Dr. she checked my records and the Dr's notes read "see in a year" that was back in may. Well to my understanding my TSH and calcium levels were to be monitored up to a… year or more. until regulated for sometime... She told me the Dr would call me back after 5 that was yesterday. It is now 12 noon the next day and I havent heard from him yet.This isnt the first time I had trouble getting thru to the office. I have relatives who also see him and are very dissatisfied with him...Time for a new Dr...

He was very kind to me and seemed concerned.

He is a bit arrogant, but most endocrinologists I have run into are. Typically not very good at communication-he is slightly better. Doesn't come off as caring and he is a bit dismissive. He is good at presenting options of care and seems to know his field, however he doesn't much care to know what you think. I think he is very knowledgable but I often leave frustrated that is isn't really listening to me- typical of many though. I recommend him as a specialist, but wouldn't want him as my primary.
