Dr. Glen Haruo Sugiyama, MD

I’ve been going to Dr. Sugiyama for many years. He’s a kind and caring doctor who’s very thorough when assessing a medical problem. The office staff are friendly. They get back to you with lab results right away. I highly recommend Dr. Sugiyama!

Very responsive to concerns or questions. He collaborates with you about your health care.

Very pleasant manner; he really listens to what I am saying. Respects my intelligence ; advises me on important steps to take but does not lecture or "talk down" to me. Has identified important health issues which I had no idea were present. I value having him as my physician.

I think 4 of my last visits, I was supposed to get bloodwork done a week prior to each visit and assumed he'd tell his staff to notify Diagnostic Labs to approve it. I did not know he was supposed to give me an authorization paper to give to DL to do the blood work and just thought they forgot to notify them, cuz every time I left their office, I wasn't given anything, but fortunately 3 out of 4 times DL contacted their office and they approved the bloodwork. The last visit was the last straw as I had cancelled a dinner with good friends, telling them I had to fast for my bloodwork the next day, which I planned to take 5:30 the next morning. When DL told me they couldn't do it, I WAS LIVID and I let Sugiyama know it in email/phone call that early morning. His response was to send a certified letter saying he was withdrawing from providing medical care to me. That was probably the best decision he made for me cuz I've found a younger, not-set-in-his- ways, more open-minded doctor… who is more concerned about my well-being than he ever was. And when I had to get physical therapy for a back pain and arm pain, he only prescribed the therapy for my back, and the PT had to call them to authorize work on my arm even after sending me to take xrays of my arm. Take it from another old-F, don't go to this doctor if you want someone who's genuinely interested in your health.

Appears to me insincere at times. Does not feel personal. Will not follow up on missed appointments. Busy.

For me, the most important aspects other than diagnosing an illness correctly is the ability to get an appointment on the DAY you are sick. As a professional, my time is important, and if I feel ill, I expect an appointment that day. I don't care if its a nurse prac or him. I want to be seen. An issue I had was being late for an appointment (stuck in traffic) they told me to reschedule for next week. Yup. NEXT week. I said never mind. If I had the flu, I'd be better by next week. If I was dying, I'd go to the ER. So I changed doctors. However, my rating of him when he saw me was very good. He's proactive. He likes to prescribe medication to cure everything. He's thorough and orders tests. I like the proactive nature. You have a problem. He'll try and solve it. Or write a script for it. His staff is terribly over burdened. They can't handle the traffic of patients. He's a great doctor. Way over his head in patients. And a poor staff makes for a poor review.

Does not like when you disagree with him. Also he prescribed a medication to which I had a reaction. Went the the ER. The ER doctor said to stop take the med. At follow up with Dr Sugiyama, he was visibly annoyed that another doctor disputed his prescription.

Dr. Sugiyama rarely sees you himself. For most routine visits, you will be scheduled to see one of his two nurse practitioners. Feels a bit like being in a health clinic.
