Dr. Gordon Michael Castleberry, MD

I recently had a very large kidney stone that made me sicker than I’ve ever been in my life. Dr. Castleberry assured me that he would get it out without invasive surgery and though it took several procedures (par to the course for large stones) he removed it. I’m eternally grateful to him for that.

Doctor is extremely creepy, and I will never go back. Needed a urologist in Starkville for kidney stones, he is not the answer. I went in for kidney stones and he touched me in a very uncomfortable way. Go to Columbus if you need help with urology especially if you’re in college. I still have nightmares about the visit.

Dr. Castleberry was the most creepy, unprofessional doctor I've ever been to. He made comments to be about how much he loved redheads and how I could cut off my hair and sell it-not only in private but in front of another nurse. He also said that redheads have the most sensitive *lady region*. He asked me questions about my sexual libido that have nothing to do with urology. Please don't go see this doctor

I never wrote a review for a doc before, but my experience there was so bizarre I remember it clearly several years later. I went for a routine exam and ended up with several expensive tests and a full-on, used-car sales pitch for testosterone injections (despite absolutely no need, no symptoms, nothing). It seemed like half his practice was devoted to these expensive, recurring injections that are, I guess, "treatment" for "something." (He made a point of telling me that he gets the injections himself and feels SO GREAT!!) It all made me nearly call the state department of health. Heck, maybe I should've. He might know a thing or two, but beware and be a wise consumer. I haven't gone back.

When I first met Dr. Castleberry, he made a comment about the color of my hair and what it could mean about my sexual libido. (I am a woman much younger than he.) I should have taken that as a red flag, but I gave him the benefit of the doubt; I thought maybe he was asking me so many personal questions because he wanted to find out more about my lifestyle and how my choices were affecting my health, so I let that uncomfortable, offensive interaction go as best I could. On my second visit, I witnessed a nurse talking about confidential medical information in the waiting room, using patient names. During my third and last visit, the nurse ran out of the room while taking my blood pressure without any explanation. After waiting for several minutes (thinking some type of emergency must be happening), I sought out another employee (I think she was office staff) to help. She also left the room while taking my blood pressure, and when she returned, the result was no longer visible. She tried… to take it again, but my arm hurt by this time, so I asked if we could skip it. I also didn't want to keep spending time on taking blood pressure, as the wait time is really long (as other reviewers had noted), and I had to get back to work. When reviewing my records later, I saw that Dr. Castleberry reported that the reason they didn't take my blood pressure was because I am afraid of getting my blood pressure taken. I think his misinterpretation of what happened really sums up my whole experience there. At this visit I was also asked to wait in a chair that was dirtied with wrappers from products used to treat the previous patient before getting my blood drawn. When I told the nurse I was nervous about getting blood drawn due to past medical trauma (something most medical professionals I've visited have experienced), she seemed concerned about taking my blood but tried. After a few unsuccessful attempts, she asked if I wanted her to keep trying or if I wanted to get my blood drawn somewhere else. I had a similar experience at my next visit so then elected to get blood drawn at OCH (with absolutely no issues and in a much cleaner facility with professional-acting staff). During Dr. Castleberry's care, I was given an expensive urine test (as others have mentioned) and ultrasound each time but never received any results of these tests. When I asked about ultrasound results, neither the nurses nor Dr. Castleberry gave me these. Dr. Castleberry also put me on medication to treat a condition for which he did not test. When I found out that the tests he had run were not, in fact, determinants for the medication he prescribed me, I asked him to test me for what the medication was treating. His response was to ask me who was the doctor and who was the patient. When I asked about the possibility of a link to stress and my physical symptoms, Dr. Castleberry said that there was no link and that if I were stressed, I should just calm down (after learning about several significant life changes, which typically create stress). Despite this downplay of my stress, in my patient record, he cited my physical symptoms as due to my "emotional instability," noting my nervousness during blood draws and that I cried at a visit (after I was completely frustrated that he wasn't listening to me and was wasting so much of my time and money). This is definitely a sexist doctor (also in regard to his communication with his all-female staff) who treated me like I had hysteria. He never checked for understanding after I told him something; he interrupted me to say whatever he was thinking without stopping to listen first. He never remembered info from previous visits, so each visit felt like the first one. His staff knocks on the door to signal him to visit the next patient after ten minutes (after the first visit), so recapping info you already discussed in the previous visit takes up most of the appointment time. When I asked for more than ten minutes at my last visit, he walked out, even though I was still trying to discuss my medical info with him.

The staff in this office are not courteous. When I called with an allergic reaction to medication, I was told that I could not talk with Dr. Castleberry. In fact, the staff were rude.

You will be waiting A LONG TIME to see this doc. Bring a book.I first went to Dr. Castleberry a number of years ago and he caught in minutes the source of a problem that two other docs could not find. The same thing happened more recently with a different problem and I rated the man a genius.BUT THEN: He started running test after test after test for tings I had no symptoms at all for until he found something that he could use to keep me coming back. He found marginally low testosterone and started me on testo shots (I got a second opinion later and was told most docs wouldn't prescribe injections unless my levels were quite a bit lower). Here is where I started losing faith in him. He told me to also go on a low glycemic index diet, and named off foods not to eat. Turns out half of what he told me not to eat are actually on the "low index" list. On the follow up after injections started, I told him about reduced libido and encounters not being as satisfying. He proceeded to give me a… lecture about how to make love properly. I'm sorry, I'm 41 years old and I know when things aren't working right. I also told him I was going overseas and that I was not going to be able to continue the therapy. Here is where he lost it. When I told him originally he said "no problem, your testo will go back to where it was and you'll be no worse off." But this time he went off on how horrible I would feel, how I at all costs had to keep taking the shots, and finally said I would go back to being "fat, lazy and unhappy" like I used to be. *double takes* Huh? This doc is a urologist and not an endocrinologist. If it's urinary or proctology he does really well. Don't listen to him about hormones. I also think he runs tests just to make money (you will give--and be charged for--a urine specimen EVERY TIME no matter why you are there).
