Dr. Grantley W Taylor, MD

I was a patient at Dr. Taylor's Community Reintegration Unit (CRU) inpatient program at McLean. It is a wonderful program, so he definitely deserves a lot of credit as the director of the program. As an individual doctor, I believe he means well, but he is unfortunately a victim of the severe arrogance that overtakes many doctors that have been in their field for several decades (especially ones that have reached a high level of status in their field). He listened carefully to the facts of my case, but in the end, he simply did not have enough empathy to understand the emotional & social dynamics of my situation on a deep level. In psychiatry, high intelligence, arrogance, and low empathy is a VERY dangerous combination. You can take your car to the most brilliant mechanic in the world, but if he's too arrogant to believe what you're telling him about the temperature you're going to drive the car in, his recommendation about what motor oil to use is nothing more than a wild… guess based on his own imagination of your situation. When you're playing with the neurochemistry of the human brain, and therefore making adjustments to the conditions of the human soul, it's a very scary thing to have your tune-up handled by the imagination of someone who doesn't think they need to listen to you to make the right calls. So, while I would HIGHLY recommend the Community Reintegration program at McClean hospital, I would also recommend that patients request another psychiatrist as their doctor there, until they find one with the empathy level required to understand their situation on a deep emotional level. All that said, I would emphasize that this was my own personal experience, and perhaps Dr. Taylor is capably of high empathetic understanding in other cases, and my case was an anomaly. In short, I'm hugely grateful for his work running the CRU program at McClean, and I'm hopeful that at some point Dr. Taylor's humility returns to him and he can become the great clinician he has the potential to be. The staff at the CRU is incredible, so at this point in time I'd tell patients to listen to the great wealth of wisdom available from all the other nurses and mental health workers in the Unit.
