Non- functioning macro-adenoma removed by Dr. Gerrars 23 yrs ago. He "accidentally" removed my Pituitary, and as a result I have had serious health conditions, including a stroke, that resulted in one cbroke into smaller 10 clots all over.
I was left with Panhypopituitarism. Life on medications, having to fight & justify nec. medications to doctors and ins., having to PROVE why I need growth hormone & testosterone. Hypopituitarism is not common, and many doctors &nurses do not even know what you're talking about. About 90% of my doctors said "Wow, you're taking me back to med school, can you get me up to speed?" Having to educate them, because it's so uncommon. 27 trips to ER, regular basis. One act changed the rest of my life. He has a God complex, like most Neurosurg., and I'm relieved I can warn others. He was so confident when he told me he does these "surgeries allllll the time", His cockiness reeked. He never apologized nor acknowledged he removed my Pituitary. I asked him to… show it to me on an MRI, and he said MRI's only see detail so a certain size and it probably didn't pick it up. Ha. His PA told me that Dr G felt bad at what happened to me. After surgery and 2 week home recovery, I had to go back to work, feeling worse than I did post surgery, I called & they would have an Endo order Labs for me. One hr later, the Endo called and said, "Where are you right now? You need to call a family member or friend to pick you up. Don't drive. I have some prescriptions for you, what pharmacy? You will need 4-6 weeks more recovery." No one told me anything else. Until I read the RX's that were for 3 months of medication, with 5 refills. This is how I figure out THIS is permanent. All of my hormones were zero, I had no Pituitary and didn't know it, and worse, the Dr Gerras didn't know it. He had removed my Pituitary inadvertently. I just knew I felt Horrible. I came close to a coma, my hormones were 0, not registering on the tests. My pituitary hasn't shown up on an MRI in 23 yrs. My surgery was 3/7/02. He said, "and if your pituitary stops working, you can replace everything with pills". You can't replace what the Pituitary does, you have secondary failure of every endocrine organ. I lost who I was, I could no longer have children, immunocompromised, for the rest of my life. My personality changed, my husband now had toaccept this new wife and this new"life". Thanks to having to take steroids everyday, forever, I've been obese ever since 3 mos after that surgery. It happens to all Panhypopituitary people. You get a Cushing's type body. So you end up with a body shape of Danny DeVito. I can't eat more than 1,100 calories per day. Take my advice, don't let him touch you. If he makes an error, there is NO FIX. You will change, everyday after surgery, you feel your self slip away. Years adjusting hormone medications, which caused other problems. He should retire, especially at his age, he did my error 22 yrs ago. Imagine now? I didn't sue him, because my heart told me it was an accident, not malicious. The amount of money we have had to pay for my health, all relating to this mishap, has been insurmountable! Easily over $120,000 over 23 years.
It's really a shame. Meanwhile, I have left Good jobs, due to being sick and exhausted and needing time to get better, it happens when your immune system is shot. I haven't been able to work, my insurance is outrageous for copays andpremiums and then tests like Labs all the time, MRI'S regularly, and Endocrinologists, Neurology, pain mgmt doctors, etc. And Dr. G is probably doing great, happy, fit & house on a cliff overlooking SD ocean. And I'm trying to prove I can't work to SS disability for 6 years now and pay an attorney, because I can't do it, because of all problems with my body and brain. I feel my life was cheated by this surgeon. He should be paying my ins & Rx bills for my life. *Notice how he only comments to patients with 5 star reviews. He still won't own up to his mistake, nor
