Dr. Gretchen Knapp Mello, MD

Dr. Mello is outstanding. I feel so fortunate to have her as my primary care doctor. She's brilliant, approachable, caring, and always takes the time to ask "what else?" -- she doesn't rush me out of the appointment as some past doctors have done.

The title says it all: Dr. Mello has over the years proven to be both an insightful, and straightforward ally in my staying well. She listens, and she advises ready to discuss and look into whether alternative care options are suitable.

After being hit by a car as a pedestrian and 4 spine surgeries, I have had a diagnosis of chronic pain for ten years. Kaiser put me on a toxic dose of methadone for 9 years and refused to refer me to a chronic pain clinic. When the FDA changed the labeling for methadone, I was taken off it abruptly without any alternative treatment. Chronic pain seriously interferes with my life but Dr. Mello is the medical legal person who has been blocking all my referrals to a pain clinic. She keeps the patients who need care the most from getting any, allegedly to protect Kaiser from lawsuits.

Dr. Mello is theeeee best doctor in the entire world. She ALWAYS responds to all of my emails, knows my medical situation without having to review past records, and does what's best for me. She is extremely knowledgeable and very understanding. Her ease with patients and caring about their health goes far beyond any care that I have ever experienced before. She always makes patients feel like their points and concerns are valid, and makes an office visit very easy to deal with, even for those of us who do not like to go to the doctor's office. She's a wonderful human being and a terrific doctor. I would recommend her to anyone! She's the best!

I'm very lucky to have good health and generally don't need to see doctors very often. Dr. Mello is my primary physician in Kaiser. My first visit with her left me feeling horrible that I had made an appt to see her as I only need an annual check up. She was very rush during the visit and said to me at the end...in the future she wanted me to use the Kaiser website to message her online and avoid coming in to see her. During these years, I never went back to see her and didn't bother to switch physician as I rarely get sick. Until recently my husband and I are planning to a baby and I wanted to get a blood test to check my health condition as well as my blood type (somehow I never knew for sure). I messaged Dr. Mello as she requested. The test results came back but no blood type. Apparently she didn't order it for me and if I really wanted that info, she'd need to order another blood test. ???!! I have a very busy work schedule and have to commute 2+hrs each day to work. Now I would… have to schedule another time off to make another trip to Kaiser and wait for the results. I'm done with this doctor.
