About Haley Boyd

An employee at Memorial Hospital in South Bend since 2011, Haley Boyd, NP, began her career as a patient care assistant. This experience confirmed her desire for a career in health care. Upon completion of her Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree, she worked as a registered nurse in Memorial’s Mother Baby Unit, providing care to mothers and newborns. After six years in that role, she moved to the Leighton Heart and Vascular Center, where she cared for patients with arrythmias who have had cardioversions, ablations, Watchman procedures, ICD placements, and pacemaker placements. Then she made another career move – “I always knew that the next step in my medical career was to be a nurse practitioner,” she says.

Working as a nurse practitioner diagnosing and treating disorders of the nervous system, including the brain, the spinal cord and the nerves, is ideal for Haley. “I chose Neurosurgery because the neurosystem is absolutely fascinating to me. There is so much to …learn and every person’s neurological system is different.”

Her approach to treatment is to include the patient in the decisions about their treatment plans. She feels if a person is heard, then they are more likely to trust the medical providers and follow the treatment plan. She wants patients to know she truly cares and wants what is best for them. “I want my patients to know that their opinions matter to me and that I want them involved in their care,” Haley says.

Through her years as a health care provider, a valuable lesson has come from the patients. They’ve taught her to stop and listen. “Patients know what’s going on with their bodies and while they may not know the correct way to say it, if we listen intentionally we could end up getting all of the answers we need. Patient’s just want to feel that they matter and that they are cared for,” she says.

In her own words…

Who is or was the most influential people/role models in your life?  My dad, because he is the most hardworking man that I have ever known and he gives and loves his family with everything that he has.

What was your first job growing up? What do you remember about it?  My first job was in retail at the mall when I was 16. I worked at a clothing store and all I remember doing was constantly folding clothes and organizing.

What is your favorite food? Movie? What was your best/worst subjects in school growing up?  Pizza, tacos, pasta, sushi – the list can go on.  My favorite movie of all time is, Now and Then.  My best subjects were math and science. Worst subject was probably English.

If you could sit down to dinner with anyone (alive or deceased) who would it be and why?  I would have dinner with my Grandma. She passed away in 2016 and was one of the most important people to me. I miss her very much.

Do you have any pets?  I have two dogs, four cats and a leopard gecko.

What is something most people don’t know about you?  I absolutely love music. I listen to an array of genres. I recently got a record player for my birthday and it is the best thing.
