I am grateful to have the brilliant Dr. Niak as my dermatologist.

Dr. Naik told me during our appt that I probably know more about Hidradenitis Suppurativa than she does. I did not find that reassuring. She then told me hers was just a "consult clinic" and she can't actually do anything for me but refer me to others and prescribe medication. I waited 4 months for an appointment with her - referred by a regular dermatologist at UCSF, so that was annoying to find out she doesn't do anything more than a regular derm. She referred me to a surgeon at UCSF who wouldn't see me for another month. I had an open wound that needed to be dealt with immediately but she said he was the best and I should wait to see him. He cancelled last minute and she refused to recommend anyone else. When I found a surgeon on my own, he didn't even look at the wound, said I didn't need a surgery, and when I asked him to call the specialist who said I did need surgery, Dr.Naik agreed with him! She refused to explain why she changed her mind. The medication she… prescribed made me so sick I couldn't stand up. When I sent her messages regarding medication and the surgery, she said it was too complicated to discuss over messages and she would call me. When I said I wanted it in writing so there was no misunderstanding, she had another dermatologist send me a registered letter saying that sending her messages is a privilege and not a right. She then refused the phone call that she offered as well as adequate treatment. She had her staff phone me to schedule an appointment, and when I asked why I should pay for another appointment just for an explanation, another registered letter was sent to me saying that she tried to set up an appointment with me but I refused (which was not the case, I simply asked why I should pay for another appointment when she said she was a consult clinic, can't do anything for me, won't refer me to anyone other than one surgeon, and doesn't clarify her decisions / change of mind). I now have painful scar tissue that I have never had to deal with in the 15 years of having HS due to trusting her advice. Having her staff and other dermatologists harass me to make an appointment with her so she could make a fake paper trail that she wasn't refusing me care was disappointing. It's a shame that this is how doctors spend their time instead of helping patients. There are a lot of doctors committed to providing efficient treatment for their patients and I don't believe anyone should settle for less. A receptionist at the surgeon's office Dr.Naik referred me to said that UCSF doctors care more about their research and teaching and don't really have as much time for patients. She suggested I would have more success with a private practice. I wish I had known that before wasting my time.

My daughter went to see this doctor and it was a terrible experience for her. I don't know why Dr.Naik is a specialist but she didn't do anything but prescribe the regular antibiotics that every other doctor can prescribe. Doxycycline, Clindamiacin, Rifampin, and then when those don't work Humira. The side effects are bad (cancer is a "side effect" on the label warning!!) There is nothing special about going to her other than spending much more money, waiting much more time for the same information that you can get from any regular doctor or nurse and pay much less and aren't too busy for you all the time. I hope this review saves you some money because this doctor is way too expensive when she doesn't do anything but prescribe antibiotics.

She is well informed about HS treatment options, but lacks empathy. And she seems to be treating patients like guinea pigs. My guess is she's only in this field because it's ripe for new discoveries, not because she cares for patients' lives.
