Dr. Harmit Singh Kalia, DO

My family, and most importantly, my mother who has died was deceived by Dr. Kalia. We went through several appointments with him being narrow minded and ignoring facts we had been telling him. Backstory, my mother had ended up in the hospital for one ailment and end up finding out that she was in liver failure. He was hung up on the fact that my mother had drank a little more than normal from drinking because of losing her job due to the pandemic (just like I think most people did, as it was a rough time for everyone). My mom had stopped months before her initial hospital stay, but he was still hung up on that no matter how many times, I told him and my mother told him. My mother was getting bloodwork every few weeks, and he didn’t seem to understand why her levels were the way they were. He accused my mother countless times that she was drinking. He ended up not believing me (I was her caretaker and going to all appointments) nor my mother. I happened to notice her next set of… bloodwork scripts was not the same. He snuck in a blood alcohol content blood test without mentioning it at all. It came back negative to his surprise, and then FINALLY sent her to a hematologist, who in turn actually took the time to get her old records and go digging, finding out my mom had hemochromatosis. My mom knew she had that, but from what I knew, her prior doctors never mentioned that it could cause cirrhosis of the liver. Finally, we had an answer to part of the problem. Now, every time Dr. Kalia mentioned getting the testing done at NYU, my mom would ask to verify that the insurance would cover it out of state as my mother had Medicaid. He would always say talk to Ashley (his person in charge of insurance verification) and it would be fine or whatever else decided to come out of his mouth. Ashley was one that you could never get a hold of and when you did, couldn’t even give a straight answer on the insurance. My mom called her insurance and they stated they would not cover out of state, but she could try getting a letter from the doctor explaining the necessity of the procedure and they would approve or deny it. She called all the different insurances that the state offered with Medicaid and they all said the same thing. She did this as a proactive measure just in case switching to a different company may benefit her. My mom would come back to him with this more than once, and he would deny what my mother would say and then say go back to Ashley. It was the same response numerous times. This had been going on for a good year and a half. My mother took it upon herself to make an appointment for a second opinion for someone in NJ to do the surgery, since Dr. Kalia wouldn’t admit to the fact that there wasn’t a way for my mother to get the surgery at NYU, basically stringing her along this whole time saying she would get better care in NY. What he fails to realize is, that due to his delay in helping my mom, and admitting that it was never going to happen at NYU, my mother never made it to that second opinion. She ended up dying, after they transferred her to NYU. I found letters from Medicaid from the day that they transferred her there, with everyone saying that it would be covered, well Medicaid denied the surgery as they had told her time and time again. If you feel you’re being strung along, or know your insurance will be giving you issues on certain things, get that second opinion. I would rather have a doctor admit that they can’t help you, especially because they damn well know that the insurance won’t cover, or whatever else it may be and refer me somewhere else than having to wind up dying because care that should have been done was clearly not.

Exceptional physician! I am a liver transplant recipient. I am doing very well under the care and guidance of Dr. Kalia.

Dr. Harmit S Kalia is the best doctor. I got excellent treatment in his clinic . I had Hepatitis C more then 20 years and now I am healthy person.
