Dr. Helen Kapsas, DO

She treated my husband at Genesis Illini hospital in Silvis, IL in 2012. Ken was terminally ill, however, we did not know that when he was admitted. He was jaundiced when he arrived there. It was Memorial Day Weekend, and the x-ray technician for MRIs we’re off for the weekend, but on call. I believe two were called in and they were there STAT. Ken was in NO pain, but we had a hard time convincing the ER Drs that he was not a “drinker”. He was as yellow as a #2 pencil. Dr. Kapsas ordered test after test. She was the most personable, kind and caring Dr that I have ever seen. And our family has seen many Doctors. When the results of the MRI and Cat Scans came back it was shocking. The Oncologist told us.....my Daughter, Son and myself, the results.....my Ken, who was 68 years old, was full of cancer. It has invaded ALL of his organs, and that he might live another week. None of the staff could believe that he was in NO pain. Neither could the Drs and the Oncologist.… Besides that, he was coherent and joking with the nurses. The next day, Ken had a heart attack. Dr Kapsas asked me if I wanted anymore done for him. My answer was “WHY?”. Then they called us into a room where a Cardiac Nurse was. She wanted to know if I wanted Ken to have an Angiogram. I could tell that Dr Kapsas did not agree. I told the nurse no, as there was no point in putting him through that procedure when his days were numbered. So next we had to decide where to send him for his final days. We decided on Clarissa Cooks’ Hospice House in Bettendorf. The Ambulance took him there the next day. It is a wonderful, caring place, along with being beautiful and accommodating. Ken went into a comatose state, but we knew that he could hear us so we kept talking to him. He passed the following day. To those of you who have had the patience to read this scenario, I need to be forthright. I do not believe that I, or my adult children, could have coped as well as we did without Dr Kapsas. Her sense of humor was great, and appropriate. She was tack full when talking with us and Ken. She was right there when we needed her. I remember when Ken had the heart attack, I was in the hall because the room was full of Heart Specialist. I could see Dr Kapsas running down the hall. She went into the room, then came out. She put her arm around me and asked how far we wanted to go with treatment. We told her “No more, no further. The Dear man wasn’t going to live long so comfort is what we want for him.” I recall that she agreed completely. Over the past few years I wondered if Dr Kapsas was still in the area. So I decided to see if I could find her.....and I did! Dr Kapsas, if you read this I do hope you remember our family. We will never forget you!
