i am somewhat upset and angry at my experience tonight so please forgive any formatting.
Generally the ER personnel and Doctors at Phoenixville Hospital are very good and polite. Over recent months I have found it necessary to visit their ER on more than one occasion in dealing with Seasonal Allergies which have caused difficultly breathing. Although dealing with this long term in another practice, tonight's experience was not what I have usually experienced.
Having been there just 3 1/2 weeks before due to our crazy spring season, I returned tonight with my wife as breathing was very difficult. The x-ray technical, and cardio technical were wonderful as usual.
Our nurse was understanding and she provided great help. However the Doctor was not what I had usually expected. Even though I told the Doctor initially I was there only a few weeks ago, and that the treatment given helped tremendously, he proceeded down a different path. Having the required x-rays and cardio… performed and with the Doctor now at least deferring to the earlier treatment that worked, we expected the pulmonary specialist to arrive for an inhalation treatment. No one arrived. No one told us they had ordered the treatment. We waited and watched and about when my wife was going to ask the station, a person came and said time for a CAT Scan.
Shocked, we immediately asked about the nebulizer treatment that is standard procedure and, I said no CAT Scan is taking place. Moreover, I said I can not believe anyone would order a CAT Scan and not tell the patient they were doing so without asking whether or not they could have one, or whether or not they wanted one. I asked the individual to please tell the Doctor No Cat Scan and to let me know what his plans were.
The Doctor appeared shortly after and accused me of refusing treatment. Responding that I had not but, had not even received the standard nebulizer treatment. Before I could complete what I was saying, he accused me of being abusive to the staff. When I challenged him who made the accusation he said, all the staff. Having had great rapport with the x-ray tech, cardio-tech as well as the nurse, my dismissing of the CAT Scan and initial questions of not following the treatment that worked just a few weeks ago must not have been to his liking.
When he tried to repeat his accusation to me, I said to him that he was a liar, and to check with the folks I mentioned. My wife sitting with me and witnessing the entire process with all the people involved can attest to the Doctor's demeanor and approach.
At this point, being totally disgusted with this sorry excuse of an ER Doctor, I checked myself out. (Note: they having made sure they collected their fees of course. Inquiries to follow later today)
Out of all this the comical scene at the end was this excuse of a Doctor making sure a young gentleman wearing a gray security suit and tin badge was behind the desk. This personally was insulting to me and one which I plan on inquiring on shortly.
Having been to this hospital multiple, multiple times, having had family work their as medical practitioners, family treated there, babies born there and family passing there, I can only believe that their recent acquisition by The Reading, PA Health System is lowering the care received.
Final Review of Doctor:
Doctor's overall attitude, - Poor
Doctor's demeanor -Poor
Doctor demonstration of professional decorum - None
Informing the patient - None. NOTE - Not only was there no effort to inform the patient but the Doctor's demonstrated physical aggressiveness towards the patient, leaning forward over the hospital bed with both arms locked in an aggressive position glaring at a patient, was outright uncalled for in any circumstances.
As stated earlier, having had family work at this hospital as licensed providers and knowing Doctors from this hospital for decades. I can not fault the whole staff as a Doctor on shift is like the captain of a ship, the rest of the team is going to do what he says or else. Guess Dr. Schiffer forgot that the patient is also the customer too. Because of this awful experience, I may have to go back to the ER sooner than anticipated. But will not and do not recommend to the general public that under any circumstances they choose Phoenixville Hospital ER as a first choice when this medical practitioner is working hisshift.
Recommendation:
You can use Phoenixville Hospital Emergency Room when needed but, if at all possible call and find out if this Doctor is on shift or will be within the following two hours of your arrival. You may definitely want to try West Chester Hospital (U of Penn Affiliated) or Paoli (Mainline Health, Bryn Mawr Hospital Affiliated)
