Dr. Hoon-Ji Helen Choi, MD

I have been seeing Dr. Choi for several years for my bone health and thyroid condition. I have found her to be very attentive and responsive. She actually writes down what you say and reviews her notes. She is a wonderful doctor and her office staff are very nice. Office is clean and not crowded. I highly recommend Dr Helen Choi.

I had an appointment with Dr. Choi that I made in April and I could not be seen until November. I arrive in November and my appointment is not in their system, and they made no accommodations for an apparent lapse in their system or staff. Then offered me an appointment in February. It is ridiculous. I urgently needed to see someone in April. I’ve had surgery and my prediabetes is still unmanaged. I don’t know what kind of doctor she is but her ability to manage her schedule and patient care is poor. Moreover, I drove an hour and a half to see her.

This review is specifically for Dr. Helen Choi. My father has been a patient of Dr. Choi, who has been managing his type-2 diabetes over the last 5 years. I come from 11 years in the healthcare industry myself and work directly with some of the best doctors who really set the bar high when it comes to patient care. It is hard for me to stand by and observe someone who is in the position to provide “health care”, treating their patient with such little respect and a dismissive attitude. Recently, my father was admitted to the ER and hospitalized for sepsis. An abscess was found around his liver. The sepsis in conjunction with his diabetes put my father in a pretty bad place and he is still recovering from this today. My father was seen by Dr. Choi last week for a check up on his A1C levels and overall evaluation since being hospitalized. Instead of feeling cared for his recent battle with sepsis and downturn of his health, my father left Dr. Choi’s office feeling dismissed and… disrespected. My father (English is not his first language) expressed to Dr. Choi that in the past she had recommended him to replace his blood sugar monitor every 2 weeks. Dr. Choi tells my dad he is wrong and has never said that and strikes an argument with my father. I can’t be certain if my dad misunderstood or perhaps may have been confused. Nevertheless, no doctor should be arguing with their patient – period. It’s called “listening to your patient” and allowing your patient to feel heard. My father also informed Dr. Choi it would be difficult for him to come on a weekly basis due to having so many different doctor appointment since his hospitalization. Dr. Choi’s response to my father was that he should look for another provider who will be “easier to see and get to” and prevented her nurse from administering a new monitor as planned that day. In hindsight, we regret not switching my father to another endocrinologist sooner. He has never had a great experience with Dr. Choi and has always come home feeling as if he was scolded and spoken to as if were a child. Over the 5 years as a patient of Dr. Choi, my father has been instructed to increase his diabetes medication every time his A1C level increased. Although I appreciate the importance of adjusting medication when necessary, I am disappointed that more effort wasn’t made to avoid increasing meds by emphasizing the power of a healthier diet and exercise. We regret that my dad has continued seeing Dr. Choi for as long as he did, primarily because she was recommended by his GP and he did not take the time to research other specialists. Needless to say, he will not be returning to Dr. Choi. Stay clear of this doctor. She is someone who has absolutely no empathy for her patients and in my opinion has no business calling herself a health care provider.

She does not listen to her patients, only relies on labwork. The last time I saw her, she walked in with my test results, told me to take a lower dose of medication, handed me a sample pack and walked out. She did not ask me how I was feeling or doing. It was very frustrating and rude. She chastised me for asking questions and trying to keep myself informed about my thyroid issues. She treated me like I was stupid and did not respect me at all. I am never going back.

When I was with Kaiser my A1C was 10.4. Dr Choi has gotten my A1C down to 6.9 without any change in my diet.

Dr. Choi is personable, very knowledgable and spends the time I need to understand my health care needs. I highly recommend her.

well.. her doctor's offce staffs are not the best but, my experience with Dr.choi is one of the best I trust within her medical field.

This is the worst doctor I have ever had the displeasure to see. I had to wait over 45 minutes to see her. The nurse was rude and a little weird. When I got into her room she examined me for 5 minutes and ordered random tests. Since I was stuck with her because I made the mistake of selecting her as my PCP - I was forced to see her every three months for medication refills. She is only in business to make money not to care for her patients. DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME SELECTING THIS DOCTOR!!!
