Dr. Howard Scott Kaufman, MD

Dr. Kaufman’s neglect almost caused my demise when he performed colon surgery on me at Johns Hopkins Hospital. I did all of peritonitis, and he had left town, leaving me in the hands of inept medical staff at Hopkins. Fortunately, I survived. Dr. Louis Battle corrected Kaufman’s botched surgery at a later date.

Difficult to get an appointment to see the doctor. Dr. Kaufman is not friendly to patients. Waiting time is very long, and he only spends a little time with you. Office staff never returned my calls. Refill prescription is difficult. My recommendation to you is to find someone else. I don't like to see you suffer from this doctor and office on top of your physical pain.

I was treated like a number not a patient by this doctor and his uncaring staff. I had an infection after his surgery due to lack of drains not being placed in the surgery site. I had an emergency surgery because of this and went through weeks of pain so bad that I thought I wouldn't live. I have a list of complaints that could make a short story. I wish I had sought treatment elsewhere!

I first saw Dr. Kaufman 8 years ago when he was a USC. He was very attentive and personable, which somehow seemed nearly impossible to me as he was also teaching some 4-6 students who were observing my appointment (awkward, considering his specialty, but they have to learn somewhere). He was very thorough with finding out exactly what my status was, through a series of MRI's, nerve tests, alternate gynecology and urology referrals to get the whole picture. The final decision was that I needed surgery, but his suggestion was that I wait as long as I could while the technology for correcting my issues evolved. As long as I was managing without pain and functioning well enough to carry out everyday life comfortably, to hold on. What surgeon says that when they have a 'for sure' procedure with a fully insured willing patient? It's one who does it for the passion of healing other, not for the paycheck. This past spring, I knew it was time to "fix" myself. I found Dr. Kaufman again,… this time at Huntington Colorectal, and made an appt.. It does take some planning ahead to get to see him as he's only in the office on Tuesdays...I think. I came with old tests in hand, we did more, he gave me another referral to his amazing partner in pelvic floor reconstruction, Dr. Tate, and we scheduled surgery. I had dreaded it over the years as I heard about the lawsuits connected with Y-mesh repair, but I knew I shouldn't continue the wait. He agreed that it wasn't "if", it was "when", and I was "there". I underwent a 6 hour robotic surgery under the skilled care of Dr. Kaufman and Dr. Tate on Wed. and was at my son't soccer game on Saturday. I am healing very well. Dr. Kaufman and his entire staff and surgical team are very caring, skilled, efficient, and they listen to your concerns and follow up. If you come across this doctor when you're searching for either pelivc floor repair or colorectal healing....I would consider yourself blessed and give them a call. It may take a month or 2 to get in, but it's worth the wait.

he was patient and took the time to answer all our questions. he even waited for more questions. He didn't try to scoot us out. he also taught us what was going on. He made us feel really comfortable.

I have had a wonderful experience with Dr Howard Kaufman. I had a very bad hysterectomy with all kinds of complications and ended up with a fistula as a result. Dr Kaufman came to my recue and fixed me and gave me hope as I had lost hope that I would be on depend forever. Dr Kaufman was very reassuring and he talked with a lot of confidence. He told me that he could fix me which he did. He was very honest as far as the timeframe to complete my treatment. He was very thorough and he has excellent bedside manners. He explains things to you and he is very patient and empathetic. He is my hero and I shall NEVER forget him.I recommend him to anyone who has colon or rectal problems and more. He is very approachable. All the people I spoke to about Dr Kaufman had nothing but GOOD things to say about him and he ha an excellent reputation among his peers, nurses etc. Thank you so much Dr Kaufman you are a rare gem in the meidcal field. Doctors like you are hard to come by.

I had been pretty much written off by my Dr. in Philadelphia after a recurrence of colo-rectal cancer. I saw Dr. Kaufman at Johns Hopkins as I interviewed the best Drs. I could find. He was top notch in every respect. I have recommended others to go to him, and if I or anyone in my family ever needed him, I would do whatever it takes to get them to him. He is the best!
