Dr. Howard Fisher Marks JR., MD

In August of 2021 I had a freak accident. With neck injuries, sternum, ribs, and a collapsing lung due to fluid from torn thoracic valve. He was the coolest Doc during my visit, there was a PA who noticed my fractured C-6 (neck). They were both my favs. Doctor Marks is one of the best ever, in my lifetime. And I’ve definitely seen more than my share.

Dr Marks has a patient and caring manner and thoroughly answered all of our questions regarding the bypass surgery. He visited me every day of my hospital stay and his office staff were helpful and responsive to my questions, I would not hesitate to recommend him to anyone needing this type of surgery.

He twice rushed out the room to talk on his cell phone and left me for more than half of a 30 minute consultation. When he came back he mischaracterized what had been said. Completely rude and condescending. Ultimately refused to treat me. I decided I was going to see a thoracic surgeon at a leading hospital in Durham. Avoid Howard Marks.

Outstanding heart surgeon. Saved my life with emergency bypass surgery on Sunday Father's Day.

On Jan 28th 2015 my dad died after spending a week in ICU following bypass surgery performed by Dr. Marks. Before the surgery and durning my dads stay in ICU Dr. Marks was so nice, his bedside manor is impeccable. But his attention to detail is non existent and resulted in my dads death. My dad died because he developed Graves’ disease because Dr. Marks failed to read my dads health history and see that he had to have his Thyroid Medication everyday so he didn’t get it. Once we found out he had Graves’ disease we asked about his thyroid medication and his response was “what thyroid medication?” It was CLEARLY written on my dads health history he had to fill out before the surgery. What kind of thoracic surgeon does open heart surgery on a person without reviewing their health history? I work in dental and we don’t even touch a patient without having a health history and medication list...and that’s just dental. 5 days later, 6 years ago today he died at the young age of 56. I don’t… know how long this review will be up before it gets taken down again but I just want anyone that is thinking of choosing Dr. Marks as their thoracic surgeon to know my dads story. He was young, and so full of life. He was an amazing husband, father, grandfather, and brother. Now he is gone and our family is still broken. His name was Fidel Alvarez and he died too soon.

I needed triple bypass surgery and Dr Marks and his staff took excellent care of me. It was difficult as the Covid virus was keeping my family away from me at this time. I want to thank those that took care of me for their great care. Thank you Dr. Marks for saving my life. Could not have better care.
