Dr. Howard F Wunderlich, MD

As I sit here thinking about how 8yrs ago today, I was hooked up to the only antibiotic that could save my life because he went on a hunch. I had a brain infection that is rarely seen but he saw it and hooked me up with the only anti-biotic that could save me. I had been sent home from other hospitals over the previous days before he walked in my hospital room. I may not have turned out perfect after the experience but that is not of his fault. But at least I am here to have memory issues and a seizure here and there.

I was a patient of Dr. Wunderlich's while hospitalized at MVH. An infection had destroyed my Mitral valve and lead to mini-strokes within my brain, so prognosis initially was not good. I had a team of doctors in multiple specialties working on my care. Dr. Wunderlich was the one doctor who would sit down with myself and my family and explain EVERYTHING going on with my care plan, in regards to not only his treatment of my infection but also plans involving the other doctors as well (some come in, say two words, stare at you, write something down and leave). We were better able to understand my situation and treatment thanks to him. If we had questions or concerns, he would talk with us. I was supposed to die that first night in ICU and ended up spending about 6 weeks total in hospital with an open heart surgery 4 weeks in. I had one follow up appointment in his office. I think the main reason behind his odd hours is due to working in the hospital to check on patients there. I was one… of those patients. Also, in regards to the other review, it's basic patient care knowledge that a doctor will not renew a prescription refill for you until you come in to see them when due (this even goes for women on birth control pills). If I don't attend my appointments and the doctor cannot see for themselves as to how I'm doing, that refill does not come through. It takes effort to take good care of your body, so make and keep those appointments!

Dr Wunderlich would rather risk the safety of his patients than work around their busy schedules. He works three days a week and refuses to make special arrangements to work with patients who are in school or have jobs.After not seeing him for 5 months due to my educational obligations, he refused to call in refills on prescriptions I had been taking for 5 years. He, instead, suggested I stop taking the meds for two weeks until I could come to his office for an appointment that I had previously made.He referred to me as non-compliant and I argue that not taking prescribed medication would render a patient non-compliant. Dr W's hours are Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 8 to 11. There might be a reason for his limited hours, but that's not my problem. His responsibilty is to his patients. A patient who loyal takes their medication and works to improve themselves should expect better from a physician with 30 years experience.Watch out for this type irrational behavior from any… doctor, but heed my warning in regards to this one. He doesn't have your best interest at heart.
