Dr. Hugh Brian Beatty, MD

Dr. Beatty had been recommended a number of years ago to us as a primary care physician. We do not go to the doctor often, but when we are ill or are due for a regular check-up. It had been a few years since I saw him, and I am heading to Africa on a mission trip, so I needed immunizations and a malaria pill prescription. I see my endocrinologist every six months, so my labwork is current through her. When I called to schedule the appointment for immunizations, instead of telling me they don't offer this service in the office, they scheduled an appointment. I came in, updated my paperwork, waited in the waiting room, had vitals taken, and was sent to a private room. After a wait there, I was told by the staff that Dr. Beatty's office does not do immunizations. I was asked if I needed anything else at that time and I said, "no, I'm just preparing for my trip to Africa." This whole experience - this office visit and the commute to and from - cost me about 2.5 hours to find out what… they could have easily told me over the phone. I realized within that week that I still needed the prescription for the Malaria pills. I called back and asked them if they could arrange for another appointment so I could see Dr. Beatty for the pills (which are required for my trip). Again, I arranged for care for my children, went to the office (taking my youngest son with me). We waited in the waiting room a bit, and then in a private room for 40 minutes. When Dr. Beatty and his assistant came into the room, he was gruff in his demeanor. He started scolding me about not seeing him regularly. He asked me what I thought I was doing coming to him for this medication when he hasn't seen me in some time. He said he would need my labs. I told him I had recently had labs done at my endocrinologists and I could have those sent over. He disregarded this offer and continued to scold and lecture me. He then went on and on about how medication can have adverse effects, even sharing an anecdote about another patient (which is not something he should do as Hippa provides he should not discuss particulars of a patient with another patient). Anyway, he went on about how the liver processes medication and he doesn't know the condition of my liver. He said he hadn't done a history and physical on me so he wouldn't know how the med would affect me. Instead of offering a physical, he continued to scold and demean me in front of my 10 year old son. He added that this is how medical malpractice suits come about. At the end of his tirade, he said, "Do you understand what I am saying?" I asked him if he were unwilling to provide me the prescription and he said that was correct and then informed his staff to refund me my co-pay. At the front desk, I told him the sweet receptionist (when she asked if I wanted another appointment) "Never. I'm never coming here again." When I got into my car, I called her and said, "I hope my approach didn't come across as though I was upset with you. I wasn't upset with you at all. I was just treated so rudely and disrespectfully by the doctor. He mentioned that he was worried that a patient would go to the Medical Board, and I'm not the type to do that sort of thing, but after his refusal to care for me and his abrasive and disrespectful interaction and the shaming and abusive way in which he spoke to me, I am going to file a report with the medical board." I sincerely hope no one goes to this doctor. He is a bully and does not live up to the Hippocratic oath to help, do no harm, and act in an ethical manner towards patients.

I am a patient of Dr. Beatty and I can honestly say that he has been the best doctor that I have seen. He cares about me, my health and my overall well being. He will not push anything on me that I don't need and he has taken care of all of my needs! I highly recommend him!

I'm not sure why I see negative comments about this doctor. I have gotten nothing but excellent treatment by Dr. Beatty. I have been in pain and over the past year he has been working with me to alleviate that pain with great success. He has also had a huge impact on my wellness. My health is a lot better and he is treating the underlying problems rather than just giving me a pill to mask the issues. This doctor wants to treat the underlying problem and not just refill medications and mask issues - maybe that's why some patients take issue, he won't just refill medications unnecessarily and he'll give you an explanation as to why he does what he does. He is not rude, rather, he goes out of his way to ensure that patients are seen and that he spends ample time with his patients. If you want to be well, see this doctor.

I work near this Dr.....he is very RUDE AND LOOKS DOWN ON ALL!! Mr. KNOW IT ALL HAVE IT ALL

At first Dr. Beatty blew my socks off with his directness, knowledge, and with how absolutely thorough he was. With time I found that all of the tests, time spent, and "required" appointments to "efficiently care" for the patient was all for the money. When it gets right down to it, he really doesn't care. When I say care, I actually mean he doesn't care about the patient's health. Additionally, one has to wait hours for a med refill, monthly, even for the insignificant meds. Most of the staff is horribly rude and is incapable of compassion. I had acquired a horrible thrush in my mouth (white spots throughout my mouth), a result of an excess of antibiotics from sinus surgery. I had also been suffering for a couple years from stomach/back pain episodes. At the time I thought it might be a reaction from the fasting I had to do for a colonoscopy, whereby the thrush was found to have spread down my esophagus and stomach. A day later, my mouth and throat was in pain, and when I… swallowed water I could feel it run down. The GI doctor said she couldn't prescribe anything until the labs came back 7-10 days later, but if she could get an ok by my primary doctor (Beatty), she would go ahead and call it in. Of course the doctor couldn't prescribe without seeing me, but an "ok" would've sufficed. We're talking about mild anti-fungus meds here, and it was just like waiting for lab results for chicken pox. Dr. Beatty demanded that I set an appointment (even though I had just seen him a week prior), and he couldn't even fit me in for another week! I have always been a paying patient, and have paid him countless dollars in total the past year, and I was completely abandoned to suffer. He didn't even bother to tell me about any natural remedies that I later found online, thank goodness, and followed them strictly. Doctors that lead you to believe that they're something exceptional, Christian even, and put the dollars before the medicine should not ethically practice medicine. Period.

staff is rude, wait time is long Dr. Beatty tends to talk to much and not listen.

Dr. Beatty has provided excellent care to me and my entire family. He has a wonderful demeanor and is genuinely concerned and the wealth and well being of his patients. He has always been available for questions and is not only a physician but a teacher. I have referred many family and friends to him and all have been very satisfied with his service.

Dr Beatty and staff, are by far the best in Bakersfield! I myself having come from Arizona, with a ton of issues. Dr Beatty made sure every problem was addressed and my medical issues are under control, also having massive pain issues they too were addressed and I continue to follow exactly what Dr Beatty has asked if me as a patient. I would not change from Dr Beatty. His Staff greets with a smile. I high recommend Dr Beatty.

Dr. Beatty does not listen. Interupts you when you are trying to tell him your problem. Acts like I have no idea what my problem was. He actually said so. I wanted to walk out of the office. Absolutely no bedside manner. Rude. I left the same way I went in... with nothing.

Dr Beatty is more interested in money than the patient. Proof, today I traveled from Shafter to Bakersfield for an appointment and upon arrival, doctor refused to see me for a follow up appointment to review several tests he had sent me for because of my account balance, which I was prepared to pay $100, but they insisted I pay $205. They did not even have the decency to inform me prior to my arrival at his office.
