Dr. Hugh Dowdy Durrence, MD

I've been a patient here for several years and, after two terrible recent experiences, I will never return. I agree that they might be able to help with the sniffles (but so does health first in West Ashley and they're MUCH cheaper if you're self pay, like me). So, definitely don't even waste your money going in for something simple. As I am self pay, I pay upfront for my entire visit each appointment. Last month, out of nowhere, they claim I now owe them additional money ($200!) from two appointments dating back to 2013! When I asked what extra charges were incurred during those visits and why it is only being brought up to me SEVEN YEARS LATER, they couldn't tell me what the charges were for, just that I needed to pay. They refused to tell me any more info. Second, the final straw, I called asking to have a medication adjusted for depression that I was not reacting well to. They refused to even see me. Neither Dr. Durrence nor his PA would take a moment to even speak to me on the… phone. Instead, I was given a hope-shattering phone call from one of the office employees, Jene. Not only was I told they would no longer be willing to help me at all, I was openly mocked as I sobbed on the phone. At liberty doctors, your health and well-being DO NOT MATTER!!! If you are in need of help, expect they will abandon you! NEVER WASTE YOUR MONEY HERE!

This office is very poorly run. His PA was flippant, they often take two weeks to return calls for prescription refills. One of the nurses yelled at me and hung up on me. I called for three days to get a pain medicine for shingles, and they did not return the call until Friday at 4:00 pm; I live over an hour away, but they refused to wait until I got there. Very rude and unprofessional!

Dr.Durrance let me go 9 months with a herniated disk in my neck before a Lady Dr. in the room suggested a MRI.

My meetings with Dr. Durrence left me feeling confidence in his abilities and appreciation for his focus--when I could finally see him. Long waits in the waiting room and kind of a weird desk staff (though the nurses were nice). At first he seemed to take a holistic view of my issues, though was then perhaps too quick to recommend medical attention, prescribing a very low and likely ineffective dose of blood pressure medicine, sending me to a cardiologist who didn't see a good reason, and to a hematologist who felt my platelet counts didn't warrant the level of concern. Then, he made the mistake of telling me and all his patients to cough up $1500 a year for MDVIP just to get in his door. Maybe that's a model that works for some people, but seeing the large number of elderly patients in the lobby I had to wonder where he thought his patients had so much disposable income. Now there is a new patients welcome sign out, so I guess he lost a few. Seems like a decent and caring doctor… if you can't get in anywhere else.

Dr. Durrance was condecending bordering on rude. He had lots of questions regarding how and who diagnosed my conditions? I surley didn't diagnose myself!! I had recently started new medication prescribed by another physician and was seeing some improvement in some symptoms. He took that to mean all was well and I needed to discontinue the treatment regime I had been on and dicontinued all the medications he had prescribed. No concern for the effect on me. Not a good plan.

Dr. Durrence does not see his patients... has an assistant who sees you.. Never see the doctor. His staff lacks professionalism and courteous office manners. Rude to patients

I would rather see the nurse than him. Rushed my visit and made me feel like I was interrupting his day or next meeting. will not go back.

The services provided are not what they use to be at the old facility.The staff does not communicate to the doctors what has been said over the phone.There are times when you will be rubberstamped and sent on your way. Other times they will spend time with you. It's a crap shoot when that will happen. Due to the case load, you have to schedule a week or so in advance just to see a doctor.
