Dr. Ian Denison Schnadig, MD

Dr. Schnadig was my mom's oncologist. He was intermittently nice and polite, while also being demeaning and rude to our family. If we had questions or concerns he became defensive and was short and curt. He actually told my sister, when she called him to voice concerns about how my mom was not doing well with her chemo, "Well, if she isn't tolerating it, maybe she should stop treatment." That and telling us more than once that some thing was "expensive" or not covered by medicare. We would gladly cash pay for things she needed! There were many more instances of his ineptness, rudeness and atrocious bedside manner. He gave us inaccurate results twice! Once saying the tumor makers were lower when they were in fact higher! Oops! And once saying her cancer had metastasized when it hadn't! He never apologized when we got the accurate results. Once we did switch oncologists it was like a breath of fresh air! The second one was intuitive and empathetic. He had my mom's… course of treatment memorized before he even walked into the room to meet her for the first time. He even gave us his cell number. My advice? Always get a second opinion! If something doesn't quite feel right about a Dr's demeanor or attitude in the initial meeting-it's going to be magnified when things get stressful. Do your research, don't feel obligated just because you had one consult, take a post diagnosis break to regroup, research and just process. Your cancer was there yesterday before diagnosis, there's no rush to get into treatment tomorrow. Be mindful and wise and look closely at all your options and seek support from family, friends and resources! I called a couple of nurse friends who worked in local hospitals to get recommendations for oncologists-Dr. Schnadig wasn't on the list of highly recommended ones! This was the hardest thing our family has had to walk through and I can honestly say his care and attitude made it worse.

I saw Dr. Schnadig today for the first time. I would highly recommend him. Cancer is very scary and you need an oncologist that "hears" you and responds to your questions in a way that is easily understood. I think Dr. Schnadig is a great choice!
