Dr. Igor DeCastro specializes in minimally invasive and microsurgical techniques for brain and spinal cord conditions and tumors. He completed neurosurgical residency programs in both his home country of Brazil and also in the United States at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS). In 1999, he was selected to participate as a research fellow in Microneurosurgery at UAMS under world-renowned neurosurgeons Gazi Yasargil, MD, and Ossama Al-Mefty, MD. During that year, Dr. DeCastro assisted Professor Yasargil in writing a special Neurosurgery paper entitled “Legacy of Microneurosurgery: Memoirs, Lessons, and Akionas” which was published in a special edition, “Men of the Century: 1950-2000.”Upon completion, Dr. DeCastro returned to Brazil to practice at the Air Force Hospital in Rio de Janeiro. There he collaborated on several papers with José Alberto Landeiro, MD, the President of the Brazilian Neurosurgical Society. Dr. DeCastro also assisted in the creation of the …Microsurgical Laboratory in the Air Force Hospital. While there, he was invited to teach a Microsurgical Anatomy of the Brain course at the prestigious Cranio-Cervical Junction workshop coordinated by Professor Evandro de Oliveira, MD for the purposes of training residents from all over the world.Dr. DeCastro moved to the United States in 2004 to complete another neurosurgical residency at UAMS. During his training he had the opportunity to work under GNI’s Dr. Richard Rowe on complex spine procedures. During his second residency, Dr. DeCastro was honored as the “Resident of the Year” three times and he became the first Resident to receive the “Chris Hackler Ethics Award.” Additionally, Dr. DeCastro obtained the highest score on the Neurosurgical Boards for the last 15 years among UAMS graduates.Dr. DeCastro entered private practice in Hot Springs, AR, in 2010 where he also served as a member and Chief of Staff of St. Vincent Hospital’s Medical Executive Committee. Dr. DeCastro has always had a goal of joining a larger practice with an emphasis on academics and research. He will serve as an Associate Professor of Neurosurgey at Mercer University.

My first visit and review were excellent, but since then, his staff has been difficult when it comes to information about billing as well as giving me information I need. I FINALLY got an MRI and I needed shots and I called five times to make an appointment only to be dismissed. His staffed lied to me about contacting my insurance company. His staff have basically refused to allow me to get treatment. I have NEVER experienced such unprofessionalism in my life. Dr. De Castro is probably one of the best doctors I've ever met and I am in constant agony but his staff won't even allow me to get treatment.

I have been seeing Dr. De Castro for almost two years. He always makes me feel at ease when I come in for my treatment. Being referred to him by my regular physician was the best thing that happened to me. In my opinion, he's the best and I trust him completely! The office staff are very nice and helpful.

Dr. DeCastro recently released me from further treatment following Lumbar Fusion on L4/L5. He had previously performed Cervical Fusion thru anterior approach. Both procedures have been tremendously successful. I had reached the point wherein I had pretty much given up on everything. Thanks to Dr. DeCastro and his VERY capable nurse, Darlene, I am once again enjoying getting out of bed in the mornings and greeting a new day.

This is my second cervical fusion surgery with Dr. DeCastro and I could not be happier with the results. I would tell anyone he is the best doctor I have ever been to,he certainly knows his stuff.Also Apn Abernathy is great.If you can see Dr.DeCastro it is worth the wait he is very busy and I know why he is the best.

Great Doctor, but almost always have to wait. Staff always seems stressed. Dr. Is VERY busy.

Prior to my procedure of having a shunt, I was skeptical because of the reviews I had read about the office staff. However, I did not find that to be the case. I did not encounter anyone to be rude or obnoxious. Everyone was very polite and compassionate. Dr. DeCastro's nurse, Darlene, was very helpful and extremely knowledgeable. Dr. DeCastro has an excellent bedside manner and was very thorough in the explanation of the procedure and took the time to answer questions. I would definitely recommend him.

I have been seeing Doctor De Castro for over 3 years, and I have nothing but praise for him: 1. he listen to you 2. he explains thing to you. 3. great bedside manner. You must understand a doctor's job is extremely hard. He never rushes to judgement.

Dr DeCastro was great - caring, pleasant, knowledgeable. However the entire office staff were rude, uncaring, unpleasant and downright obnoxious. I understand he "inherited" this staff - he really needs to clean house - keeping Darlene and replacing everyone else.

Dr. DeCastro was highly recommended....very courteous, easy to talk to.....explained procedures in an understandable manner.....promptness was given only 3 stars due to long wait in office but he spends quality time with you.
