Dr. Rick Abbott is the director of Surgical Neuro-oncology at the Childrens Hospital at Montefiore, Director of FUNCTION, a multidisciplinary group managing children and adults with chronic neuromuscular disabilities, and Professor of Clinical Neurological Surgery, Pediatrics at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Dr. Abbott has held numerous posts in the national and international pediatric neurosurgery organizations. He has served as the Treasurer, Secretary, Chairperson-Elect and Chairperson of the AANS/CNS Joint Section for Pediatric Neurosurgery; Treasurer, Secretary, President-elect and is the current President for the American Society of Pediatric Neurosurgeons; Scientific Program Chair, Treasurer, President-elect and President of the International Society for Pediatric Neurosurgery; and Chairman of the Credentials Committee of the American Board of Pediatric Neurological Surgery. He has been a Geographical Editor for Childs Nervous System and Associate Editor for Neurosurgery. He has edited a volume of Neurosurgery Clinics of North America titled Clinical Neuroendoscopy and is currently the Editor-in-Chief for a soon to be released, web-based textbook on pediatric neurosurgery. He has authored journal articles on hydrocephalus and neuroendoscopy including management of complicated shunted hydrocephalus, treatment of cerebral palsy, brachial plexus injuries in children and tumors in the nervous systems of children. He has also published on the use of electrophysiological monitoring to protect the nervous system during surgery. He has traveled to emerging countries in South America, Africa and Asia to instruct in the use of neuroendoscopy for the treatment of hydrocephalus and other topics of pediatric neurosurgery.
