Dr. Friedland knew he wanted to be a pediatrician in high school, but it wasn't until his last year of medical school at the State University of New York at Buffalo School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences (1993) that he discovered internal medicine-pediatrics as a career path. "I had great Med-Peds mentors who influenced my decision," he says.
He completed a combined internal medicine-pediatrics residency at the University of Cincinnati Hospitals and Children's Hospital Medical Center of Cincinnati in 1997 and served another year as a chief resident in Internal Medicine. He earned board certifications in both specialties that same year.
Dr. Friedland joined the Christiana Care Health Care Center multispecialty group practice and the faculty, as associate director of the Med-Peds program, in 1998. He became the Med-Peds residency program director in 1999. He is also a clinical assistant professor in internal medicine and clinical assistant professor in pediatrics and internal …medicine at Jefferson Medical College. He also is the 2004-2005 president of the Med-Peds Program Directors Association and won the 2005 American College of Physicians Walter J. McDonald Award for Young Physicians.
In his downtime, Dr. Friedland pursues an avid interest in his family and money management. He readily shares his knowledge with residents about the value of budgets, consolidating educational debts and managing on a finite income. "Don't wait until you're 30 to begin this part of your education," he advises.
Dr. Friedland is living proof that a Med-Peds specialist can practice in both disciplines successfully and pursue an academic career at the same time. Although the workday is long, Dr. Friedland says the rewards are worth the effort. There isn't any other job he'd rather be doing.
"Residency is hard, but it also can be enjoyable," he says. "I loved my time as a resident. It's an opportunity for free learning and working one-on-one with faculty and subspecialists in a mentoring relationship unlike any other you'll experience in your career."On the joys and rewards of Med-Peds and teaching
Teaching and mentoring residents and medical students are two responsibilities that Dr. Friedland relishes most. "I hope I serve as a role model for residents in our training program," he says. "I enjoy showing them how I practice medicine both inside and outside the examination room. My favorite question from colleagues, students, administrators and insurance companies is: What is Med-Peds?"
One of Dr. Friedland's goals is to teach Med-Peds residents how to think both like an internist and a pediatrician, which, in part, he explains means combining deductive reasoning with just the right dash of humor. "A Med-Peds physician must be adaptable to the diverse needs and personalities of his or her patients who range from newborns, to adolescents to geriatrics," he says. "This is both challenging and exciting."
As Dr. Friedland sees it, the beauty of the combined Med-Peds specialty is the overlap in the knowledge base. "You get the best of both disciplines combined," he says. "One of the biggest pluses is the opportunity to establish lifelong doctor-patient relationships for pediatric patients who grow and mature into adulthood."
Dr. Friedland admits that the Med-Peds residency is difficult and demanding. "There is less time in the program for redundancy and repetition in a four-year program. You have to be able to pass the same board examinations as well as someone who is specializing in just one," he says. "You need to become an efficient, lifelong learner."
When he interviews prospective residents, Dr. Friedland looks for people who are intelligent and serious about their education. "I also want our residents to be well-rounded. They should ask themselves why they want to embark on this journey." He advises students to be studious and hard-working. "You may not always know all the answers, but you need to know where to find them. Patients will demand that you stay current."
