A nationally renowned expert with more than 50 years of experience treating hematologic malignancies, Jacob D. Bitran, M.D., M.B.A., F.A.C.P., is a clinical professor of hematology and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation at City of Hope® Cancer Center Chicago.In his practice, Dr. Bitran helps diagnose and treat a wide range of blood cancers, including high-grade lymphoma, high-risk leukemias and myeloma. His goal is to offer curative therapy wherever possible and, if a cure is not possible, to serve patients with compassion and expertise, with the goal of extending their quality of life and their time with their families. His goals are to grow City of Hope Chicago’s stem cell transplant program and to explore leading-edge therapies for conditions such as multiple sclerosis.As a researcher and scholar, Dr. Bitran has published hundreds of papers, abstracts and book chapters that explore innovative new approaches to hematology-oncology, among many other topics. He has received numerous awards for his work as a physician, educator and clinician, including frequent inclusion on the “Best Doctors in America” list, and is a member of multiple professional associations, including the American Society of Hematology, the International Society of Experimental Hematology, and the American Society of Bone Marrow and Blood Transplantation, and as a diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine.Before taking on his current role at City of Hope, Dr. Bitran led a number of transformative blood cancer and stem cell transplant programs in the Chicagoland area, including those at the University of Chicago and Lutheran General Hospital, where he was also president of the medical staff. Dr. Bitran earned his medical degree at the University of Illinois College of Medicine and completed his internship and residency at Michael Reese Hospital, followed by another residency in pathology at Rush Medical Center and a fellowship in hematology-oncology at the University of Chicago.
