Dr. James O Barlow

Gauze was left in my nasal cavity my surgery was on Fri over weekend my nose was draining serious mucous for hours. I didn't know what was happening tried calling doctor but no response as office closed weekend. Finally to my surprise a large piece of gauze came out of my nose by the way of of my throat and into my mouth. He also had terrible unprofessional nursing assistants that all seem like it's on the job training. During surgery It took so long for Dr. To get back to me as he was juggling several patients & I was worried I was not going to be numb from the injections which are extremely painful & wanted to avoid going thru it all over again unnecessarily, I mentioned this to the assistant who was very cold and she then stuck the needle in the end of my nose asking if I felt that!! Who does that!!? shes not the doctor and what kind of doctor lets their employees do this to their patients! Additionally It was never explained that I was going to be getting several injections down… both sides of my nose on the bridge and cut all the way up to between my eyes as the skin cancer was on the lower tip of my nose, I thought I had endured the worst already, had no idea the intensity of what was to happen next. Anyway wen I called the office about the gauze situation on Monday and explained to the doctor what happened he had nothing to say!! Not one word and he had me in speaker phone as I could hear that I was on speaker phobe, he acted like I was living about the entire thing. This has really made me frightened to go to ANY dermatologist in the future, and if I do I hope to go to one that has 20 yrs experience and actually has excellent track record. I can only hope that Dr. Barlow and any others like him will one day have more compassion for the people who come to their office. As for Dr. Barlow he gets zero stars from me.

Short and sweet...Dr. Barlow is what every Dr. should aspire to - on every level.

I went to this office because of his Mohs certification and knowledge. I knew I had a couple of skin cancers and previously have gone to doctors in Florida that perform Mohs procedure for removal. Mohs differs from other techniques in that microscopic examination of all excised tissues occurs during rather than after the surgery, thereby eliminating the need to "estimate" how far out or deep the roots of the skin cancer go. This allows the Mohs surgeon to remove all of the cancer cells while sparing as much normal tissue as possible. The procedure entails removing one thin layer of tissue at a time; as each layer is removed, its margins are studied under a microscope for the presence of cancer cells. If the margins are cancer-free, the surgery is ended. If not, more tissue is removed from the margin where the cancer cells were found, and the procedure is repeated until all the margins of the final tissue sample examined are clear of cancer. Not in this case. Large excisions were made,… then sent to a lab and I had to wait a week for results and another appointment. I asked if they performed Mohs the normal way (while you wait) and they said they only do it for cancers of the face. Unfortunately, mine were on my arms. I didn't like waiting a week to find out if they got it all.

I didn't even see the doctor, so in fairness, I can't rate him. I will only say that I was requested to arrive 15 minutes prior to my appointment, which I did. I then waited another 30 minutes in the lobby. Another patient arrived about 15 minutes after my appointment time and was taken back within minutes, while I continued to wait. I was then called back to the exam room and waited yet another 15 minutes. I feel that a wait of 15 to 30 minutes in total is acceptable, but 45 minutes or longer is not. It is unprofessional and discourteous. I am a consumer and medical practitioners are a service commodity. A little detail so many tend to forget.
