Dr. James Steven Cain, MD

I saw Dr. Cain just an hour ago. It was my initial consultation with him regarding an unusual disease process for which there has been some precedent for the effective use of a treatment that Dr. Cain knows very well: therapeutic plasma exchange aka TPE. He was understanding of my frustration with failed treatment modalities and sincerely wanted to help me acquire the treatment. He explained well the essential elements of his role in the process and immediately during the visit called my referring neurologist's office to explain his role and to suggest to my neurology provider the next steps necessary in order for me to receive the treatments. He proved a very good listener and was truly interested in my medical history, to the point that he ran late for his next patient because of the time he took with me. He allowed my numerous questions and answered each one thoughtfully. I have read the other reviews here and am inclined to disagree with any negative remarks. I have seen… innumerable doctors over many years and few have been as thoughtful and proactive as Dr. Cain. Highly recommended doctor for any patient(s) needing expert nephrology care in the Roanoke/NRV areas.

He comes across as a know it all without any significant appreciation of his patient's ability to comprehend the severity of their conditions.

The patients have no other choice in the Roanoke valley to go to, and this facility has no competition to motivate them to be better.... caring, followups, calling with lab results, etc...
