Dr. James Quentin Clemens, MD

I saw him several years ago for a bladder neck stricture and urinary incontinence issue. I am a male. He and his (all female) nursing staff made it clear by their brusque behavior that they only wanted to see females for patients.

Now on my 31 st year of IC. Dr. Clemens continues to double my capacity to 400-450 cc with hydros every six months. Fellows come from all over the USA hoping to be the one fellow assigned to work with him for a year atleast . The care that I receive at U of MI surgery, anethesia and recovery room staff is exceptional! It is a team effort. People call me as I worked recovery room as RN for 25 yrs and, yes with IC the entire time. It was very hard and painful. I can walk our family dog and not be in pelvic pain with each and every step. I sleep 5 hours straight without getting up to urinate. This is how Dr. Clemens has helped me. He is not arrogant and pompous at all quite the opposite actually. I always want to know the lates IC research well he is doing a lot of IC research and gaining in finding cause ,treatment and yes cure for IC. Listen very carefully full attention when he speaks and explains IC and the research as well . I am always taken quite back by the substance and, validity… when he speaks of IC. He once told me all his IC patients are severe! Then it hit me a few minutes later. That exactly how he treats each and every IC patient all are severe - that is empathy my friends not arrogance or money greedy please. Now, we will sit down and discuss what's new for me in IC therapies. Pain he is the only MD I have ever had that truly understands the level of my pain level and pain level of IC patients period. My pain MD and family MD don't get how bad the IC pain is.

Dr. Clemens was hand picked to take over my interstitial cystitis care in 2008 after former Uro Dr.MCGuire retired Dr. Clemens has helped me more then any MD At U of MI in year 25 at time now my 30 th year. He has doubled my bladder capacity. I can slep 4-5 hours at night without getting up to urinate. Previously, I get up every 25 minutes at nighttime with no sleep and had to work FT daily as recovery room RN. He very kind and empathetic regarding the pain of IC along with it the depression and anxiety the disease impacts ones life. He very supportive. Residents enjoy wrking and having him teach them that as RN I can clearly observe that on my own. He is huge and very instrumental in IC research. He is always doing a research IC project and presenting to other IC specialists and Uros. Simply the best !!

Good surgeon. Poor bedside mannor, he does not offer ANY EMOTIONAL SUPPORT-- WHEN his treatments fail. Has a BIGGER THAN LIFE EGO.I feel based on my experience that he is asmart doctor--he just does not know how to communicate. Is very ARGUMENTIVE. He gets mad at you has a patient fast, and is unforgiving. Reminds you of all your mistakes.

Excellent bedside manner - caring and thoughful.He was able to fix my problem when two other urologists couldn't.

Dr Clemens was handpicked for my by Dr McGuire. I knew 3yrs ago he would be taking over my care as a long term interstitial cystitis patient. I knew he was top notch urologist if Dr McGuire selected and trained Dr Clemens to take over his practice when he retiredI met him mintues before my surgery. He was nice and kind to me. He was at my bedside when I woke up. I have heard Dr Clemens did not have a good bedside manner from staff . I so far have had two apt/surgery with him and I like him ok and I am an RN pretty picky. He is my first true IC specialist I have had on my case of my illness. Dr Clemens is going places in treatment and research of interstital cystitis. I have had one surgical procedure by him and it was my best treatment in 25yr and two months later doing best ever still! So dont believe he is not a compassionate md so far I disagree people.

I went to see Dr. Clemens for another opinion. I wanted to see if Dr. Clemens had different options for my particular bladder condtion. He told me to see the urologist I went to for this one particular treatment option. I did not care for his attitude. He acts like a robot and lacks warmth. I would never see him again. Its obvious he is just in this profession for the money and ego.
