Dr. James Everett Fortune, MD

Dr. Fortune cared for my grandmother multiply time over the past year. Every visit he kept us well informed on her care. He also did everything to keep her from having surgery which she was glad to have a doctor who cared about his patient than just cutting on them.

I've known Dr Fortune since he was in Medical school at UT. He preformed a double hernia operation with complications. Dr Fortune is, very simply, the best man in his field. I would never trust anyone else.

I went to the emergency room for an infection. The ER doc sought a surgical consult, who admitted me to the hospital before tests were even done. The surgeon to whom I was assigned, Dr James Fortune, of Southaven, MS, finally came to see me (the following morning about 10 am, after not permitting me food or drink all the previous day and all night). When I sought explanation for his care plan...which including keeping me 2 or 3 more days on IV antibiotics, even though bloodwork showed my infection was not systemic..not affecting my blood counts at all. I was to be kept NPO (no food or drink at all) until I was discharged "just in case" (even though I was not a surgical candidate based on the CT). When I pressed him on this, he told me things were on my CT report that were not. (I have a copy of the report). When I pressed on that issue, he leaned in, way too close for my comfort (after I had already asked him to step back), and said "Look, you got enough reserves to last you"… (yep. I'm over weight)....at which point, I said "oh no..you're fired...leave." He began to walk away, and then stopped, turned around and began talking again. "All I'm saying is.." and I began shouting over him "Leave! Leave!" That last comment served no purpose other than to embarrass me, so that I would shut up and be compliant. Additionally, he never took the time to examine me himself, at any point. I ran, not walked, out of the hospital and sought care at a different place. That doctor wrote me a prescription for a week of antibiotics and said my infection was essentially resolved. I will be filing reports of Dr Fortunes unprofessional conduct with the state and hospital boards.

This man needs to retire. My mom went into the ER and after hearing her condition over the phone her said she needed to be discharged. After 10 hours he finally came and looked at her and said her condition was serious and she needed surgery that only a specialist could perform. He had only approved Tylenol for pain at this point. When I tried to speak to him about my mother's care, he basically dismissed me. He has zero bedside manner and doesn't know what he is talking about. More than anything, he wants to discharge patients so he doesn't have to deal with them. If Dr. Fortune is the doctor on call, do yourself a favor and go on to the next hospital.

Reviews are to be used as a learning tool... right? Well maybe the woman I spoke to in this department will learn that she needs to be professional when speaking to a patient. I’ll be professional and spare u her name but I do hope u read this review and realize how unbelievably rude you are. Dr. Fortune was great with my daughter I have no complaints. But I do have a complaint with this woman who handles insurance and billing. If you cannot speak to people any better than u did with me then find another occupation. Maybe an accountant where u don’t deal with the public too much. Thank you :)

Dr. Fortune is an irresponsible Doctor. He did two surgeries on my mother. He never checked on her once since the surgery. I was able to speak to him over the phone less than an hour after my mother’s surgery, he was no longer at the hospital. He spoke to me very condescending. He wouldn’t allow me to complete a sentence without interrupting me. I don’t recommend him to anyone that is concerned about their health. He also put in an order for a nicotine patch. My mother is not a smoker. His nurse said I will cancel the order. Why is he still in practice if he is this careless.

Dr. Fortune took excellent care of my husband. He has a wonderful bedside manner and is easy to talk to. He takes time to explain anything you might not understand. He checked in on him every day when he was in the hospital.

Refused to answer any questions or tell me about a treatment plan. Refused surgery but still wouldn't let me have any food for 3 days. Refused to answer nurse's pages. Kept me in the hospital a full day extra with no tests scheduled and never checked up on me. He was told I had to leave or I would lose my job, and he never showed up. I waited seven hours and then had to check out AMA. He used intimidation tactics to try to get me to shut up and stop asking me questions. He is negligent, callous, condescending, and does not care that he did not fix my problem and am still suffering. He just ran up my bill for nothing.

I was admitted through the ER with a gallbladder full of stones. My first interaction with Dr. Fortune started with him entering my room, not saying a word to me, leaving the door open, trying to pull the blanket off me and trying to examine me while I was unclothed in the bed. I of course protested, not knowing who this guy was, not having anyone else present in the room, and the DOOR BEING WIDE OPEN and all. Dr. Fortune ordered countless other tests, and finally obtained results that were inconclusive. After three days at the hospital, I were told that I didn't need surgery and could leave. The specialist I was dealing with said I needed surgery, and Dr Fortune would not do it. When I tried to talk to Dr Fortune about this and make sense of it, he became angry and removed himself from my case. I ended up having to go to a different hospital, where they told me that if I hadn't had the stones removed from my pancreatic duct, I could have died.

Dr. Fortune performed gall bladder surgery recently, very satisfied with the whole procedure. When my family needs a surgeon it will be Dr. Fortune.
