Dr. James Paul Halper, MD

I guess another reviewer had bad experiences with CIIT, whatever that is. I see Dr. Halper at his 60 Sutton Place S location so I have no experience with that other location or the other people associated with it . What I can say is that Dr. Halper has nothing to do with logistics. He is literally incapable of doing anything related to scheduling or billing. Think of every absent-minded genius story you've ever heard and multiply it by 10. That's Dr. Halper to a tee. Other people handle the mundane details -- which can be extraordinarily frustrating, especially when critical prescriptions are involved, I know! (though his assistant at the location where I see him is amazing; I don't know where Dr. H found someone so gifted at organizational activities; If you run all appointments and scripts by Ana, you'll be perfectly happy)-- while his truly brilliant mind is somewhere else trying to figure out how to help the people he cares for. The man is a genius. I went to the city's best high… school and then to Harvard. I saw very little "genius" at those fancy schools. Dr. Halper's medical and healing creativity is what true genius looks like. It's only when I saw that other doctors can't reel off obscure details the way Dr. H can or even understand the importance of obviously important breakthroughs that I realized the depth of his knowledge. It's hard to see his genius because it's masked by absent-mindedness and child-like humility. And unlike literally every other doctor I've ever met, in any specialty, Dr. Halper cares about his patients unconditionally. I have never encountered another human being with as much compassion as Dr. Halper has, which he shows day after day for patient after patient, many of whom would drive the rest of us absolutely insane. He is also the most patient, non-judgmental person I have ever encountered (I doubt most therapists could reach this level). I'll admit that I realized these things very gradually as I've gotten to know him over 2-3 years now. I've caused him (minor) problem after problem, and unlike other doctors he's never once gotten angry and he never gave up on me. Honestly, I would have given up on me a long time ago. As for money: I see him privately without insurance, but his rate is extremely reasonable for a NYC psychiatrist. In a city where vulture tutors charge $7000-$2000 to "teach" kids tests, his rates are almost nothing. He could double his rates or more and still be extremely successful, seeing patients every day of the week. And for the amount of knowledge and outside-the-box, extraordinarily courageous and unique thinking he gives his patients (there is absolutely no limit to what he'll do, how hard he'll search, the number of people he'll talk to in order to find or create a solution for you; find me someone else who cares that much, in ANY field), anyone who sees him should be extremely grateful (though I doubt many are -- they're all too self-absorbed with their own issues). All that being said, he and Ana are still always trying to under-charge me (forgiving missed sessions that were my fault, rounding down when my time goes beyond what was scheduled, etc). And when I need help, he'll drop everything to reach to me. I know he does the same for everyone else, too. Who else would call you on Christmas and New Year's Eve or New Years day and every day in between just to make sure that you're doing ok during a very dark period of your life? He's the greatest man -- no, the greatest person -- I've ever met; I am so thankful I found him and know him. If you're looking for a doctor, I hope you are lucky enough to meet him and smart enough to stick with him despite the frustrating aspects. You should have no doubt that you are being treated by a Master physician, a man from whom other doctors can all learn a lesson or ten.

There were a lot of contradictions between what he said one session and me telling him about it the next session. On session was cancelled 3 hours before the date with no real reason given. I could go on but I just wanted future patients to be aware. It's possible he is wonderful and for whatever reason there was bad chemistry between the two of us.

I wish I could give him 0 stars to convey how unacceptable my experience was with the CIIT center and Dr. Halper. After waiting for an appointment for 6 weeks to see Dr. James Halper, I was called the day before to tell me he would need to cancel and that I could see a RNP named Peggy Hardy. I had no choice as the prescription given to me by my GP, that had high efficacy, was running out. After waiting in the waiting room for 85 minutes beyond my scheduled appointment, Peggy Hardy told me that I should look towards my spirituality (I'm an atheist) to keep myself from divorcing my cheating wife. I attempted to make another appointment with Dr. Halper but again was cancelled on two more times the day before the appointment. For someone that requires medication continuance, this is highly unacceptable and debatably unethical. The moment I told them I was using medical insurance was when Dr. Halper began cancelling. I have filed a complaint with the board of health to that effect.

Dr. Halper is very caring and very smart. He is very good with trying different drug therapies to see which works best.

Dr H is very smart and conscientious. He is mad scientist but very aware of latest research and treatment. Digs deep into mind body issues/instersections
