Dr. James Richard Kates, MD

With regards to a very formative experience I had with Dr. Kates; I came forward when the advise given, the treatment plan put forth, the medications prescribed, did not match the ‘undisclosed diagnos(es)’ found in my files both at the NH Dept. of Vocational Ed. and the SMHC. I came forward when I discovered information I shared in confidence, privately, was misused, inaccurately complied, and stored for years- well past the expiration date. (Medical records are the property of the individual, best find out what’s in yours). I came forward when it became clear that I had been “used” by the mental heath system, namely for their gain, so to petition the federal government for funding, to pay employees and the SMH Center’s expenses. I came forward when an incongruency between the various files, including the (imposed) disability file, was discovered by me, and when the date on the medical release form I signed did not correlate with information transferred to another agency i.e.… dept. of voc. rehab., Portsmouth office, then later transferred out of that office without my written permission. No actual legal ‘informed consent’ was granted in my case, though a long lasting negative consequence resulted from the ‘supposed agreement’ formed... I came forward to protect my legacy and family name. I came forward because the likes of Dr. Kates and associates essentially stole my autonomy. I was unduly influenced to live an inordinate amount of my life ‘marginalized’ by the actions of inexperienced, unqualified, and unlicensed individuals employed by the state of NH. The dozen or more involved , in my opinion, I allege, are guilty of libel and slander. I worked for years with vulnerable populations, teenagers in foster care , the elderly, and Alzheimer’s patients, and there is no way I could have done that with a borderline personality disorder, hypochondriasis, and major depression; other descriptive labels found in the file(s) include: body dysmorphic disorder, OCD, agoraphobia, anxiety disorder etc. Really, all that? Yes. I came forward because I was misled by “the system”. God provided me the appropriate “insights” about all this, then pointed me to the plethora of published “facts” I needed to gather, in order to stand up against the fraud ( as I see it) perpetrated against me. Withholding a diagnosis is illegal and 'stacking diagnoses' is considered “political”, both of which happened in my situation; any wise person would have labeled me with complicated ’grief’. For theses reasons, and then some, I do not recommend this Dr.

We had a very thorough discussion of symptoms and concerns. This doctor is personable and understanding of very personal experiences and I would recommend his expertise. My mental health improved after his treatment. I’ve moved and am no longer a patient but would continue in his care if I were living in the area.

He mad me feel uncomfortable. Doesn’t take the time with you. I guess the counselors do that which are also a joke. If I have depression I want to see a doctor for help not a counselor. WTH Glad I don’t go anymore I found a more caring doctor at a brand new facility in MA

Dr Kate’s is a horrible doctor. If you want to be diagnosed correctly do not go see him! He doesn’t care. He will just put you on tons of medicines. Worst Psychiatrist I have ever met! So glad I decided to change.

He is the worst doctor in such an important field of medicine. He does not listen to you. He lies. He doesn’t remember telling you something. Only wants to prescribe medicine to you. I wouldn’t refer him to any living thing on earth!!! If you need help go find someone else. Don’t even go to where he is practicing at! Stay as far away as you can. Mental Health is important and doesn't care. The biggest LIAR I have ever met. I think he needs to see a mental health professional, he needs help.

He is horrible and uncaring. He does not care about his patients at all. He only thinks about himself. I do not recommend him at all. I have an eating disorder and he does not care.

I saw him many years ago. He misdiagnosed me. He treated me with meds that only made things worse. I needed help. It was the scariest time in my life. This guy doesn’t do his job. He should not be practicing in this field.

Saw this charmer once in the midst of a severe suicidal depressive crisis. Got told I was "setting him up" to fail and that he "wanted no part of it." Left feeling frighteningly more suicidal than when I arrived, and probably wouldn't have survived if I hadn't had the referring therapist to talk to about this awful, awful experience with Dr. James R. Kates.

Understanding, very experienced, direct, and good at being a psychiatrist. He has had considerable experience, and I trust him. He doesn't beat around the bush and is honest about his opinion. I think he is great.
