Dr. James Edward Maciulla, MD

Thirty-eight years ago Dr Maciulla was my doctor, I was pregnant with my second child. I did not know it at the time, but my chances of having another child were slim. I had a rare blood type and the placenta had dropped early, almost three months early. I was told I needed bed rest, but at no time did I feel that I would loose my child. Dr Maciulla was at the hospital with me five different times in three months, and I had my son, a little early but within an ounce of six pounds. That was considered the safest weight we could have him and he was almost exactly six pounds. Dr Macuilla asked me when I wanted to have my baby and I broke down in tears for the first time, he delivered my son that day. Today my son is an engineer, rides mountain bikes, always healthy, don't ever give up. Life is a gift, take care of it. My son knows of Dr Macuilla and I will always be thankful to him.

Refused a request for an ultrasound prior to me leaving on a trip out of state at 27 weeks. Even though I bleed during part of pregnancy. Ended up massively hemorrhaging while out of state. Spent 8 weeks in hospital and he refused to speak to my out of state Dr. He refused to comp me for my paid prenatal and delivery fee since I had to deliver out of state. Also the stress and cost of finding child care for my other child and dog while out of state for 3 months. I was unable to leave for another month due to complications following delivery. Due to his negligence I almost bled to death in a rural area out of state, possibly losing my infant. Including the cost I incurred.

Asked for Ultrasound prior to vacation at 7 months since I had bleeding earlier. Refused it, I went and hemorrhaged in rural area out of state. Ended up spending 8 weeks in bed and eventual c-section in hospital out of state. He refused to talk with my doctor out of state or comp me for delivery fee package since he didn’t end of delivering me. I had to manage a childcare from out of state for other child. Horrible experience and negligence.

Sure, Dr. Maciulla coddled me and made me feel good about myself, but what it boiled down to is this. He ignored multiple symptoms of pre-term labor. By the time I sought a second opinion in California at 19 weeks, my baby was funneling through and needed an emergency cerclage, hospitalized bedrest and progesterone shots until she was born. When I came back to Arizona for followup Dr. Maciulla had the nerve to tell me that none of this actually happened and that I was a psycho. No, Dr. Maciulla YOU are the psycho for not taking the necessary precautions for preventing preterm labor in a high risk patient. I have a healthy child and it is thanks to the tireless work of an MFM at UCLA. Do not trust this man. He apparently tried the same tactic with a 40 year old woman and she passed away. Avoid at all costs.

I'm givi mg 5 stars because I'm sure he was a wonderful doctor, but unfortunately he's retired as far as I know because when i called the number they said he was. ??

I moved to Tucson not knowing anyone, so i had to rely on internet reviews to find my OB. I didn't have a great experience with my last OB so I was very picky. Even though I didn't have a c-section before, the fact that he is one of the only Drs that does VBACs told me that he was highly skilled and up to date on his information. I was not disappointed. I have a lot of pre-term labor and my daughter was not quite 37 weeks when she was born. My previous OB acted like it was no big deal and since i was already dilated sent me to the hospital and even went to far as to break my water when i hadn't dilated more (so she could catch her flight to England). When the preterm labor happened in this pregnancy Dr Maciulla's only agenda was to keep the baby healthy and in the womb as long as possible. He didnt do any vaginal exams bc he didnt want to send me into labor uneccessarily. It worked and my son was born full-term (though still on the early side). Also I would take my daughter to the… appts and she would get so scared. Dr. Maciulla was the only one in the office who could get her to stop crying. I dont love the office facility since it's pretty old but the medical care i recieved was so excellent i can over look that. As to his humor, as some people have said, it's not my style. It's not crude, but he has the same 3 or 4 jokes that he tells everytime and he wants you to participate in them :) lol. He's a super nice guy, you just kinda have to take him as he is.

Dr. Maciulla & an ER nurse just happened to be at a bowling tournament in California, when my father's heart stopped. They successfully performed CPR and revived dad before the paramedics arrived. Thank you, Dr. Maciulla!

I have cerebal Palsey & scolosis Dr Maciullla was the best doctor ever. He never made me feel bad I love him he's a really good Dr I had a C section but everything was okay

If you are seeking a natural (or as close to natural as possible) birth but have risked-out at the Birth Center, consider transferring to Dr. Maciulla rather than delivering at TMC. Dr. Maciulla may be the last OB in town who assists "difficult" vaginal births such as twins, breech, and VBAC - and is supportive about them, not judgmental. But he is also an excellent surgeon so if you do end up with a c-section for whatever reason, you're in good hands. Personality-wise, he is patient, supportive and extremely knowledgeable. He's also very warm, though I've heard from some other patients that his boisterous sense of humor takes some getting used to (I didn't mind it in the least!). Really a very compassionate human being who wants to empower women to have the births they want, but without compromising safety or health. The best of both worlds!

After being led on up to my 39th wk of pregnancy by a doctor who said she was comfortable with doing a VBAC only to tell me she isn't anymore and that I didn't have an option and I "had" to have an elective repeat cesarean I decided to seek another OB doctor who has had several yrs experience and worked with high risk patients, since they would be more "comfortable" with my situation. He took me on as a patient and helped me successfully do a VBAC. Great personality and bedside manner. Highly recommend. Thanks for everything.
