Dr. James E Mayer Junior

My 17-year old son had impacted wisdom teeth and we were referred to Dr. James Mayer at Western Lake Erie OMS. We were told that he would be under general anesthesia--asleep and not feel or remember anything. The staff told me that the surgery went great. When I saw my son, I immediately knew something was wrong. It turned out that he'd WOKEN UP during the surgery and could hear, see, and feel everything. He tried to signal to them that he was awake by waving his hands and they either didn't notice or ignored him. His eyes were open. He remembers their conversation during the surgery. I immediately went to talk to the staff and was told that my son HALLUCINATED the entire thing. They also told me that it's very common for the "hallucination" to happen and he'd only imagined the pain. They never apologized or admitted the mistake and they insisted that my son was wrong. I called the office and spoke with Dr. Mayer, who was clearly annoyed with me for asking about the anesthesia drugs.… I contacted several lawyers, but because there wasn't a physical injury during the surgery, we cannot take legal action. My son is traumatized from the experience. We trusted that Dr. Mayer knew what he was doing AND that he was truthful when he said my son would be asleep and not feel any pain. I do not recommend this doctor or this office, as they do not own up to their mistakes, attempt to apologize for them, or even have the decency to follow up and see how my son is recovering mentally.
