Dr. James Edward Nahlik, MD

Both my husband and I had the misfortune to see Dr. Nahlik in the Progress West ER when he was still practicing there. He managed to misdiagnose us both; my husband had an abscess that was misdiagnosed as hemorrhoids, while I had acute pancreatitis that was misdiagnosed as acute gastritis. He wouldn't even touch my husband or look close enough to make the correct diagnosis, which led to emergency surgery before the abscess got worse. In my case, he didn't even do the required blood work and I lived with discomfort and pain for 5 years before a better ER doctor made the correct diagnosis and I was able to have my gall bladder removed. I'm glad he's not practicing at Progress West anymore but I worry he's still barely doing the work somewhere else.

In both cases, Dr. Nahlik did the bare minimum and managed to misdiagnose both of us; he told my husband he had hemorrhoids when in fact he had an abscess, and told me I had acute gastritis when I actually had acute pancreatitis. He did no blood work for either of us and barely listened to symptoms before picking the easiest diagnosis that meant he had to do the least amount of work. He wouldn't even touch my husband or get close enough to make the correct diagnosis, which led to emergency surgery a week later. I'm glad he's not practicing at Progress West anymore, but I wish he wasn't practicing at all.

He was condescending. Showed little or no knowledge of my problems. Interjected subject matter not in any way related to my problems, which made my condition worse. Would not take my dog to him to be treated for fleas.

Dr Nahlik gives his patients his CELL phone number and, get this, he answers it! He is amazing! Office staff? He makes your appointments when you call by looking at his calendar on his phone! I don't mind him answering his cell while I am in an appointment because he has always answered my calls--never had to leave a voice mail. He tells you he'll call you right back. He is an MD that specializes in ADHD though so he is probably afraid that if he doesn't answer, you may lose your phone in the meantime, or have your phone turned off for not paying the bill. He is the greatest. I feel like I should not really be telling everyone, though, because I want him all for myself. He is on staff at Missouri Baptist in St Louis, but he sees patients in his office there, too. Specializes in attention, so the ADHD parent and child can see him together. My daughter who is ten years old loves going to see him. He knows how to talk to her and he coaches the parent too. He treats you as a whole… person, and takes a lot of time with you.
