Dr. James Willoughby Penuel JR., MD

Dr Penuel has been my doctor for years and years. Did many endocrinology on me for 16years. Then many colonoscopies. He was retiring when I went in the last time. We just couldnt put our fingers on what was wrong and still wrong. He retired and I miss him. He always seem to have the right answers. I believed he tried to keep putting his retirement off saying he wished he could have gotten me back to health, on my feet before retiring. But days were going in to weeks. He retired. I was blessed to have him for 16 years he was the BEST! Maureen Briskin. ????????

I had my colonoscopy done on Jan. 11 and had such great care from Dr. Penuel and he took the time to explain the outcome. On May 9, I saw his PA, John Washington, and he also did a wonderful job at accessing my problem and resolution of it. Thank you for the great care your team gives. Debbie Baack

Poor bedside manner

Dr Penuel was one of the most impressive physicians I have ever met, and I spent 25 years in the pharmaceutical industry interacting with physicians of all specialties. I met him after being admitted to Health Park from the ER and he sat down, asked me questions, listened to my situation and then gave me his assessment based on his vast experience and knowledge. And then he took extra time & effort to reassure me and my husband and to alleviate our fears of what might be! Our next two interactions with him, before and after my procedure, we were equally as impressed with his compassion, confidence and knowledge. I can't imagine there is a better Gastroenterologist!

Things worked like a fine turned clock from check in to discharge. Appropriate questions and information provide at every point of contact with staff/physician.

Dr. Penuel took the time to actually find out what was wrong with me when another Doctor just gave up. I was diagnosed with Achalasia and was vomiting after eating anything even sometimes drinking water. Dr. Penuel listened to my problems and kept going until he figured ot what was going on with me. Thanks Dr. Penuel, You ROCK!!!

I was recently diagnosed with Achalasia by Dr. Penuel. I had been vomiting at every meal since Nov. of 2009 and went to another Gastroentologist first here in Fort Myers and he diagnosed me wrong, Then when I called him to let him know I was still vomiting after his treatment it took him about 2 days to get back to me and his reaction was perscribing me some medicine that could cause brain damage and/or facial tics, and neurological damage. And then proceded to say "I have no I dea why you are still vomiting (as apposed to saying lets find out why). I then went to my Dr. who recommended me to Dr. Penuel and he listened to my problems and told me that we will test me for Achalasia and if I do not have that, that we will find out what is going on in my body. Dr. Penuel said "I have found in my years of being a Dr. that you have to listen to your patients because they are the only ones who know whats going on with their bodies" That made me feel very confident in him. I am now waiting for… surgery to get some releif from the Achalasia (because ther is no cure) and I am VERY HAPPY with Dr. Penuel and his staff for their caring, considerate services!
