Dr. James Harry Phelan, MD

Dr Phelan was kind, warm and caring and very thorough. He recommended monitoring something others had dismissed. He folllowed up on previous visits and was concerned about the whole of me, not just the reason I came in. Will definitely keep him as my doctor.

Dr Phelan is very kind, warm and caring, and very thorough. He suggested monitoring something others have dismissed. He followed up on previous visits of whom I had seen others. He recommended for me to follow through with something I had forgotten. He asked questions others ask and was concerned about my whole health. Not just the reason for the visit. Finally I have a medical doctor concerned about me. I will definitely keep him as my doctor.

He is so cold that his wife has to wear insulated gowns to bed

This is my personal experience... he NEVER examined me, never even ordered labs. I went to see him 3 times in as many weeks for what I was told was sciatic nerve pain. I had no medical issues prior to this 'flair' up, he told me to get a book on stretching, while typing in his computer, without EVER examining me. He finally ordered a MRI after my husband begged him. The MRI tech told me he was going to have the MRI read STAT because it was not sciatic nerve. For 3 days I called him trying to get the results, I was told the MRI was inconclusive and I needed another. That was not true, it was read to him hours after it was performed and he was told it showed I had a deadly abscess, he never called me to tell me! I was in the hospital for 6 weeks, had to have muscles removed from my body that were infected because he was incompetent and wouldn't get off of his computer to actually give me an exam. Thankfully another doctor did examine me, he saved my life and sent me to the ER where the… did blood work and caught the infection. DO NOT GO SEE THIS MAN! I've been feeling poorly for a week took off from work to see this doctor I told him I really wanted to feel better I was fixing to leave for a cruise in four days he told me he thought what I had was viral I've been over weight for 25 years I've had doctors tell me if I lost weight I would be healthier but this doctor said to me just because you got all this food laid out in front of you doesn't mean you should eat it all an then he said an you should join an arobics class while your on the cruise an exercise he obviously has a problem with fat people I didn't pay him money to insult me he is just rude an now I feel worse than how I felt when I went in there He was insulting me I don't recommend this tall rude skinny man

This was by far my most disappointing visit to a doctor I have ever had in my life. I hoped this Doctor would at least take a swab of my throat to try to identify what is going on that I have had a issue with for over 5 months. He was rude and abrupt. There was NO bed side manner. He seemed totally uninterested. He looked at my throat for 5 seconds there was no way he could even find the back of my throat that quick much less make an evaluation. He was in the room less than 5 minutes after I waited for over 40 minutes for him to see me. I even arrived 30 minutes early still had to wait over 40 minutes after my appt. time for him to rush in like he was running a race. Gave me a prescription for something I already have, and I told him that. This was the biggest waste of time EVER. He even made fun of my comments about the prescription I already have because I told him I was concerned about the warnings and would prefer to take something that may be a little safer. He told me I… was going to die from something. He said I took a risk getting in the car to come there today. I said that is true but when a med. comes with as many warning as this I am concerned. He said you can die from drinking water. Then he started telling me all the things I could die from. Absolutely rediculous scenarios. In my mind this doctor is a doctor Impersonator. This was a truly sad ending to what I hoped would be an answer to my problem.

I have been very pleased with my experiences with Dr. Phelan. He is professional, experienced and personable. He takes time with me during my visits and explains things thoroughly, always answering my questions and working to ensure my needs are met. I would recommend Dr. Phelan to anyone looking for an experienced, professional and patient doctor who will work to find the best results for the issues.

The only things that weren't horrible about this place are all gone. This office has become part of memorial Herman medical group and I'm so glad to say that the arrogant phelan and his snotty receptionist thankfully no longer accept my insurance. Even after years of visiting this family practice these people still treat me like a stranger or worse. I'm just glad to be rid of them

I have been twice to Dr, Phelan and both times were great. I just came from California and was directed to a different doctor at first. It was a clinic and was treated very abusive. I found Dr. Phelan and he has worked great with my diabetes. The office staff are nice and very helpful to my needs. I get a copy what was said and all discussions we had during my visit. I am happy to have him as my doctor and would recommend his services to anyone.

Phelan seems arogant and barely listens in the 1-2 minutes he pops into your room. After he sees you, it is unclear what actions are taken (Did I recieve a prescription?? What should I do about the symptoms I told the Dr. About?? Is that it? Do I leave now?) I have experienced this on several occations, and so has my family. Penny is wonderful and always clears up the prescription mix-ups and confusion I have after seeing the Dr. The receptionist is prompt, but can seem insensitive at time.
