Dr. Retzer’s office is close by and gets fantastic ratings so I was happy to get an appointment there. I was even more pleased, when I arrived, to see a notice on the wall stating that things would always be explained, and no one would ever leave feeling like they weren’t cared for. I don’t remember the exact wording, but the sign left me with the sense that this practice is truly caring and patent centered. As I was checking in I was asked to read some agreement and sign. I noticed something in the agreement about X-rays and checked with the person at the desk to confirm that I would retain the right to decide for myself whether or not to get X-rays at any given point in time. She asked when I last had X-rays and we began discussing requesting those records, until she said they would only take bite-wings now. I expressed that, in the absence of any symptoms, I prefer not to get X-rays as often as recommended and she said it is policy. I explained that I have read some research on the… overall impact of overuse of preventative radiation-based tests on cancer rates, and I have concerns about my radiation exposure and she replied that it is policy. I stated that I would be willing to sign a waiver absolving the office of responsibility for anything they missed that an X-ray would have revealed, I asked if I could talk to the doctor about my concerns, I asked if I was being told that I had to consent to waiving my right to decide whether or not to have radiation shot at my head in order to obtain any treatment at all, and she said it was policy. I was extremely disappointed that there was no attempt at explanation of why such a hard-lined policy is important, no response to my concerns, no opportunity to actually talk to Dr. Retzer. I did leave that office feeling like I wasn’t cared for. I left feeling like I had been told that if I wanted to be treated at all, I had to let someone else make all my treatment decisions for me. I left feeling like I had just had the least patient centered, and least caring, medical experience of my life. I hope Dr. Retzer reconsiders this policy.

While traveling through New Mexico this week I had a dental issue that needed attention. Dr. Retzer and his office staff took care of my problem the same day I called with such professionalism without even charging me. They answered my questions and made me feel like I had been coming to the for years. I would highly recommend this practice for dental care!

The office staff is fantastic. They are always friendly, and work with our large family's complicated schedule for appointments. I have been very happy with the quality of care we've received here, and the hygienists are exceptional.
