Dr. James Lawrence Southwell JR., DO

He was very caring and knew exactly what was going on with me. I have been dealing with a condition for more then 2 year and had all the test done under the sun and he was able to explain it in 30 minutes what was going on! It was as simple as upping one of my medicines and adding new! He was very easy going and listened.

He is a very compassionate about taking care of his patients. Have saw him numerous times and he has been very caring and sympathetic to what was going on. He also was willing to take on my 2 children as patients and have showed them attentiveness to what they were dealing will. Would recommend him to anyone for care. The best around.

Dr. Southwell was rude, arrogant and had no knowledge of my condition. He wanted me to stop taking a medication that requires a 2 week taper. He wanted me to stop in 2 days. I had a severe reaction so called his office. Dr. Southwell told me to sweat it out. I called my PCP because I became depressed and suicidal. She told me that it was side effects of the sudden stop of taking the meds. She had me resume taking my meds and got me into a different neurologist. Run from Dr. Southwell. He is bad news!!!

Dr Southwell is my neurologist, I am not a very complaint patient and he is always very kind when I com into see him. Regardless as if I have followed his direction or not. If there is something going on that I have not told him he just says "Don't you think I need to know these things"? He makes you feel very comfortable, he spend as much time with you as it takes for you to feel comfortable and knowledgeable of what is going on. He answers questions and he runs test to back up his diagnosis. His staff is WONDERFUL! I would definitely recommend him to anyone looking for a neurologist. Actually I have, my mother sees him as well.

He was horrible. The last time I saw him he told me, " there's really nothing more I can do for you. Good luck" and went to shake my hand while I cried. So cold and uncaring. Definitely acted like he had better things to do. At my first visit he left the room to yell at workmen trying to fix the air conditioning (should've left then). He was also the lecturing type. Visceral reaction to this doctor - would not recommend to anyone and if you get "established" with him at KUMed, now you have to be "released" by him when you want to see a different neurologist. Archaic system and infuriating that I have to get permission from my "abusive husband" to get a divorce from him...

He is arrogant, condescending, rude and just plain mean. He knows his stuff, but would rather label your problems as being psycho.

I spent 38 yrs in search of a good neurologist and finally found one in Dr Southwell. He's smart, informative, empathetic, willing to investigate and dig into the problem, creative with solutions, and best of all has a great sense of humor. I travel 3 hrs each way for my treatments and appointments with him and will continue to do that. Best neurologist I have ever worked with! I would highly recommend him!

I found Dr. Southwell to be a very honest, open and caring physician. He explained aspects of my condition that I didn't know anything about and was very understanding. He always answered my questions thoughtfully and I felt that he was very thoughtful and eloquent in his responses. I would suggest Dr. Southwell to all of my family and friends.

Dr Southwell is one of the most compassionate caregivers it has been my privilege to see. The thing that struck me so powerfully each time I saw him was the fact that he is willing to spend time to talk to you and listen to you. I never felt rushed, I never felt dismissed or dis-regarded by Dr Southwell. I feel like his grasp of medicine was thorough, and he merged my medical issues with the neurological issues for which I was seeing him seamlessly and appropriately.

My husband has neuropathy in both legs. Dr. Southwell was recommended by a friend and we first started seeing him April 2017. Our first visit with him was excellent. He was very thorough and explained everything very well. He gave us time to ask questions and he answered in a very straight forward manner explaining in detail what was happening. Because we and he did not yet know the cause of the neuropathy he ordered extensive blood work and did and EMG. One of his labs came back abnormal and that helped to discover the underlying disease. Had he not have been so persistent and meticulous I suspect this would not have been discovered in it's early stages. We would highly recommend him and we will continue to see him. The medication that my husband is not on has helped his neuropathy pain immensely and we are grateful to Dr. Southwell for his help.
