Dr. James Stephen Spitz, MD

Dr. James Spitz performed a sphincterotomy to treat my chronic anal fissure at the 12 o’clock position. He cut into the internal sphincter muscle at the 3 o’clock position. I returned to see him for several follow ups reporting anal leakage. His response was, “Take Konsyl (psyllium) to bulk up the stool.” He said it helped another male patient of his that had the same surgery. He did not seem to be concerned about what I had reported. I got a bad feeling about Dr.Spitz and asked for a copy of my medical records, including the doctor’s chart that documented all my visits. Surprisingly, he wrote that I had not reported any incontinence after the surgery and all the other follow up visit notes were blank, with no mention of my reporting leakage of fecal matter. Now, I am left with daily leakage and by noon, each day, the tissue around my anus begins to get irritated from the fecal acids. This is not right. Dr. Spitz falsified his notes, apparently in an attempt to avoid a malpractice law… suit. I have read hot and cold reviews about Dr. Spitz and his inconsistencies in care seem quite evident. My guess is there are many patients like me that have experienced botched surgeries by Dr. Spitz.

I had a laproscopic colonectomy and could not have been happier with my care. I found both Dr. Spitz, his nurses and his office staff caring and helpful. He called the Friday after my surgery to clarify my lab results and to check to see how I was doing. I never felt rushed by him and in fact when he ran late and I was needing to leave his nurse called to finish the instructions so I could get to work.

Doctor sat and talked to his staff about his weekend while I was waiting in the room for over a half hour. When he finally came in he said “sorry I am late I had an emergency “. Very arrogant.

Dr. Spitz has now performed 2 surgeries on me. He is incredibly professional and skilled- I trust him with my medical care very much so. He came highly recommended from some of my other medical colleagues. His office RNs are wonderful to deal with- excellent follow through every time which I really appreciate. I would highly recommend Dr. Spitz to anyone.

In Dec 2018, Dr. Spitz performed Laparascopic Subtotal Colectomy on me, at the age of 63, to address Colonic Inertia. I was in the hospital for only 1 night. I am now 2 months post-op, and the results of the surgery are phenomenal. Dr. Spitz gave me a fresh start at life after many years of debilitating constipation issues. Prior to surgery my diet was very limited, I was dependent on large quanities of daily laxatives, and had lots of discomfort throughout each and every day. Travel was impossible. After surgery I am able to eat virtually anything, travel easily, and have very little discomfort. I highly recommend Dr. Spitz as a colorectal surgeon. Based on my experience, he is a highly skilled surgeon who is also very approachable, open, and honest.

Overall appointment lasted probably 5 min. I felt like Dr. Spitz was in hurry and didn't really listened what I was saying and asking, I really had this feeling that he tried to cut me off asap, like he had one eye on me, and one eye on the clock. It was my first and most likely last visit to this doctor.

Dr. Spitz knows specific conditions to a tee however if something is more complex or requires a more detailed analysis he falls short. He provided me with some benefit, but ended up having to go to a different surgeon to get a more detailed analysis and other surgical options. Also do your own referrals. The doctors he refers you to are not open minded and many will just blindly follow him without doing their own assessments. He is conservative in his approach which appears to be good, but at the same time it is not the most appropriate course of action. Sometimes surgery is needed and warranted instead of medication for the problem. I feel if he took more time to assess a patient's condition, he could better align the most appropriate treatment for the patient instead of just sticking to conservative methods which do not always work and/or provide significant relief.

Dr. Spitz did an outstanding job from conducting the routine colonoscopy and finding a cancerous tumor, to performing the surgery to remove it. He was conscientious and thorough. He maintained a positive,, sincere, and encouraging attitude through the whole ordeal. A cancer diagnosis is an intimidating reality, and he helped me through it.

Seeing Dr. Spitz was the most horrible experience of my life.
