Dr. James Blair Steier, MD

Dr. Steier is by far the best doctor I've had. He takes enough time with me to find out what my issues are (I have plenty) and doesn't rush me out. Yes, I sometimes wait for him for a while, but he is WELL worth it--this just shows me that he takes time with every patient. His staff is caring and professional. He can't ever leave me.

Dr. Steier is amazing. He genuinely cares for his patients, and spends adequate time with them to make sure they are taken care of. I sometimes wait past my appointment time, but he is very worth it.

Dr. Steier's office is BUSY. He overbooks like I have never seen before. I waited three hours in his waiting room for one appointment. While I appreciate that he wants to get people in who need to see him, no doctor is worth that wait. As for his diagnostic skills? With thirty years of labs and tests diagnosing my lupus, he tried to say I didn't have it. He's a nice guy, but not a great doc.

Dr. Steier was highly recommended to me by two other excellent physicians. He's been very personable but doesn't go over lab results with me or listen to my heart and lungs as other rheum docs have. He has not yet shown me that he is an excellent clinician. Twice I have arrived at the office (3 hour drive) and was told "he had a family emergency". Never had this experience with other physicians. Also, getting script refill authorizations takes 1-2 weeks and lots of phone calls--think the problem is with his nursing staff or at the pharmacy that's part of his center. His M.A., Melissa, is very nice.

Dr. Steier is an asset to the Albuquerque community. He has been my rheumatologist for 10 years and has given me a proper diagnosis ad treatment plan. He is compassionate and spends time with me and is sensitive to my medical and emotional disease going through a chronic condition. He also refers me when appropriate. Being a nurse, I have know and worked with many doctors and he is the best!

Dr. Steier is the 4th Rheumatologist I have seen during the past 5 years that I have been dealing with RA. He is very caring, knowledgeable and listens to my concerns. My last Rheumatologist made me feel like it was all hopeless and I had better just listen to her - she felt diet wouldn't matter, supplements wouldn't matter and Dr. Steier feels all of these things are important. His staff is very considerate and helpful also. I have to drive 2 1/2 hours to see him but it's worth it.

It is sometimes hard to get into Dr. Steier, but that is because he's such a good Dr. The office wait can be long, but he takes as much time as needed with each patient. He has helped me, and basically saved my sister's life by diagnosing her autoimmune when other Dr.s just ignored her symptoms. He's a good man, a good Dr. and he will always listen.

I appreciate the time that Dr. Steier spends with me and the concern for my health that he demonstrates.

Dr. Steier takes time and interest in your care. He found out that i was in the hospital for a health issue and called me and followed up after i was sent home. I was in the hospital for an emergency. He is a great diagnostician and was very concerned about a shift in my health and addressed it immediately. I trust him more than any other doctor i have had in my care.

While I agree about the comments here regarding wait times and general disorganization in the front office, I am convinced that James Steier is the best physician I have ever had. I would take my family to see him in a heartbeat, and have recommended him to many friends. Dr. Steier routinely spends >30 minutes with me each visit, asking endless questions and showing genuine concern about every detail. He's a fantastic problem solver with very broad medical knowledge, so if you have some unknown issue he'll work to determine the root cause -- rather than prescribing pain killers or antibiotics and moving on. Next time you come in, he'll remember your last discussion and build on that. If you're truly interested in your health, go see him. Expect to wait. Better yet, pick an early appointment (like 8am) and you'll be fine. FYI, he's been rated the "Top Doc" (rheumatology) by ABQ the magazine for several years in a row.
