Dr. James Francis Wilmarth, OD

James F. Wilmarth, OD, is an optometrist who provides comprehensive eye care for patients seven years and older. He specializes in routine vision exams, prescribing glasses and contact lenses, and diagnosing and managing common eye conditions such as dry eye, glaucoma, cataracts and macular degeneration. Dr. Wilmarth also monitors patients with diabetes and other health conditions that can affect eye health, helping them protect and preserve their vision.With decades of experience in optometry, Dr. Wilmarth has cared for thousands of patients, offering thoughtful, thorough eye care. His clinical expertise also includes contact lens fittings, managing refractive errors such as nearsightedness and farsightedness, and working alongside ophthalmologists to co-manage surgical cases when needed. “Early detection and consistent care are key to preventing vision loss,” he says. “That’s why I’m dedicated to helping patients maintain healthy eyes at every stage of …life.”Before joining Geisinger, Dr. Wilmarth practiced optometry in private practice settings, served as an assistant professor at Hershey Medical Center’s Department of Ophthalmology and trained future physicians in clinical refraction, optics and contact lens care. He has also presented research on patient participation in clinical trials for chronic eye diseases. He holds a Doctor of Optometry from Pennsylvania College of Optometry, as well as a graduate degree in Health Evaluation Sciences from the Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine. Originally from the Philadelphia suburbs, Dr. Wilmarth enjoys living and practicing in this region, where he has built long-standing relationships with patients and their families.
