Where to start? In 2006, I was injured on the job at the age of 27. I was in immense pain, and both of my legs were severely impacted by the disc issues I was having. After a less-than-stellar experience with an occupational doctor, I FINALLY got referred to dr. Smith. He explained everything about my injury, and he took the time to answer every single question I ever had. I scheduled my micro-discectomy of the L5-S1. Unfortunately, my injury was too severe for this surgery to be effective, BUT the best part was that dr. Smith told my father and boyfriend right after surgery that it "was less than ideal". He didn't paint some pretty picture- he told them the truth. Five weeks later, I had to have a spinal fusion of the L5-S1. I had complications (no fault of the doctor's), so I had to have a third surgery- a revision and decompression. I won't lie- it was a long road and a very difficult recovery. Dr. Smith was excellent throughout. He took care of me, his bedside manner was that of a… saint, and he truly saved my life. In 2008 I came off all drugs, and in 2010 welcomed my first daughter (via c-section- not risking my back again), and I am very happy to say I am a mere two weeks from delivering my second. Without dr. Smith, none of this would've been possible. He truly gave me back a life worth living.

Since surgery by Dr Smith I have had nothing but pain and complications. His office is totally dysfunctional and you have to wait at least an hour to see him. Do yourself a favor; look for another Dr.Forgot, his bedside manner is OK.

Had a lumbar fusion performed by Dr. Smith. At the very first visit, he took the time to explain to me onscreen what the MRI and X-Rays showed, what the options were and what he recommended. He was great. I ended up having the surgery and he is a fantastic surgeon. I am now 8 months into my recovery and things are going very well. He has been communicative at most of the followup visits - there was a visit or two when I thought he was terse - but he is always open to questions and will answer thoroughly.

With this being my 3rd time to see the Dr. Smith, my experience has not been favorable. Each visit was an average of 1 hour wait time just to get into the exam room. From there it is another 10-15 minute wait time until one is seen. The overall staff are not at all friendly, nor helpful. Dr. Smith himself seems very experienced; however I would seriously question his (male) PA assistant.

Dr.Smith is amazing. Understanding, caring and works with you to get better. I always share with people about his work. I absolutely believe that your outcome will be positive.

No beating around the bush or sugar coating things around here with me .I tell it like it is, I speak my mind always have, always will ! Take it or leave it ! At times this is may not be such a good thing ! Dr Smith is the man period ! Dr Smith flat out wants to do his absolute best at all times,and most often does. Dr Smith is magical in the operating room ! Dr smith's bed side manor gets an A+Dr Jason A Smith came highly recommended by six of the bay area's top spine surgeons. I asked all six of them, the bay area's top spinal surgeons the same question. If they had a spouse or child that needed a spinal fusion who they would trust their family members life to for back or neck issues or worse off, God forbid a major spinal surgery.All of the top Dr's I talked with each said the same thing. I have been trying to remove my "very disappointed" review but this site won't let me. I had some miscommunications with the office that were less than ideal, but office staff was always courteous and kind. I just want to go on record that this is an excellent doctor. I have seen good doctors, but no one provided me a more thoughtful and thorough evaluation. See him, and be nice to staff!!! Or you'll end up like me, regretting that you can't continue seeing this doctor. I've written other retractions but so far they haven't posted. Hopefully this one will.

Dr. Smith has been a blessing to me! He's performed TWO cervical proceedures, one being a 2-level fusion and the most recent, an artifical disc replacement. He's not intimidated, and will go the extra mile for you!! John Muir is a wonderful hospital which adds to a successful recovery. I feel thankful to have a doctor like Jason Smith!!

My initial consultation was great, best to date on a serious spinal condition. He ordered two different tests and his office manager booked me for a follow up appt. Sometime after that there was a schedule change as Dr was out of town but they failed to notify me of the need to reschedule (150 mile round trip) It took many weeks to rebook. The office mgr also failed to order the test results from labs, and informed me upon arrival for my long-awaited, twice rescheduled followup appt that I was supposed to bring the results in with me (cited the expense of postage)-- fine if she would have told me that before the appointment, but she didn't. Staff never returned phone calls, the burden was on you to call until you could catch them near the phone. They were polite but just couldn't seem to get it right. Waiting many weeks in constant pain makes you very anxious to get in because you pin your hopes on that doctor helping you. As I said, Dr Smith had instructed me to book the… follow up to go over test results. Upon arrival, after all the headaches of trying to get the appt and going for two outside tests that he ordered, he said I should see another Dr since he couldn't do this particular surgery. He never even reviewed the test results with me! The truth was he was miffed that I was displeased with his staff (I was polite but clearly annoyed by that point). In fact he said it was standard to hand-carry in test results, but in my experience usually they were sent directly to the ordering physician (typically they like to review them prior to the appointment). I desperately needed someone to follow my condition as I was not having surgery at that point (which even he had advised against for the time being). Why order tests if you don't want to see this patient in the future? He didn't discuss my medical issue at all, had me out of there in less than five minutes AND he charged my insurance for a follow up visit. I was very disappointed because think I would have liked this doctor but the schizophrenic nature of my experience there was upsetting. I was made to feel as though I had done something wrong when in fact I did all that was expected of me as a patient, it was his office staff who couldn't seem to get anything right.
