Jeff Kinner, DDS
Jeff Kinner was born in Iowa. Jeff remembers walking to school through corn fields in the late summer and snow in the winter. It was the winters that brought his family to Las Vegas in 1964. At that time, the Union Railroad Station (now where the Union Plaza Hotel stands) was at the foot of Fremont Street. He remembers getting off the train, and walking out onto “glitter gulch”. “We weren’t in Iowa anymore”, recalls Dr. Kinner.
Driven by Compassion: Driven to Excellence
During his time growing up in Las Vegas, Jeff Kinner was a member of the Boy Scouts. At the end of career as a scout, he had more merit badges and civic awards than any other scout in the state of Nevada.
Jeff Kinner graduated third in his class at Western High School in 1975.
Jeff Kinner graduated High Distinction with a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. After scoring in the 99th percentile on the Dental College Admissions Test, Jeff Kinner was accepted to …all dental schools which he applied. Upon careful consideration, he chose University of the Pacific Dental School in San Francisco, California. There he received a full academic scholarship and graduated Phi Kappa Phi with a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree in 1983.
Dr. Kinner has practiced in Las Vegas, Nevada since 1983. Dr. Kinner is a general dentist, practice limited to children from birth to the age of eighteen. His practice has a strong prevention program, allowing his young patients to enjoy very low cavity occurrence rates. His practice focuses on reversing early decay before dental restorations become necessary.
Dr. Kinner’s record of compassion goes back to the beginning of his dental career. In 1997, Dr. Kinner received Congressional Recognition for his work with at-risk children in Nevada. Dr. Kinner also received an extremely rare palace invitation, with National Recognition by the King of Thailand, for his contributions to the children of Thailand.
In 2007, Dr. Kinner had a sense that children with special needs, especially those with autism, were not receiving dental care with the dignity they deserved. He formed the Autism Dental Center for Children to forge new strategies for the treatment of children with autism. Children who were once automatically taken to a surgery center or put into a straight jacket for dental treatment are now often integrated into a private practice environment. Most can receive routine recare visits without being hospitalized, restrained or sedated.
Dr. Kinner also has the "Big Hairy Audacious Goal" of having a cavity-free practice. "Even if a cure for dental decay is not found, my practice will be cavity-free before I retire", says Dr. Kinner. To that end, over the course of almost 2 years, Dr. Kinner developed a chlorhexidine gel for children that treats gingivitis and helps kill the bacteria that cause decay. Chlorhexidine is already used as an oral rinse and in sub-gingival implant to cure gum disease. "The only difference," explains Dr. Kinner, "is that my patent-pending formulation will not be sold for profit: it will be made freely available to compounding pharmacies."
