Prior to his appointment as Dean of the School of Medicine and Health Sciences, he served as the Leon M. Yochelson professor and chair of the Department of Psychiatry (2000-2010). Dr. Akman has a long history of community service and has served on numerous nonprofit boards of directors including Whitman-Walker Clinic and Food & Friends. Dr. Akman has been honored by numerous professional societies and by his peers on multiple occasions as a leading psychiatrist and educator.
