Dr. Jeffrey Howard Burack, MD

Dr. Burack is intellectually well qualified to practice, yet he is pulled between his clinical practice, research issues, and a host of other commitments outside of patient care. You will never be just a patient but also a reasearch project complete with recommendations to change treatments based on his research interests and not just on your own well-being. He's split between being a patient-cented clinician and a researcher willing to sacrifice individual outcomes in the name of research. So its a mixed bag. He knows his field but his loyalties are divided and if you find yourself on the wrong side of the divide your care will suffer. He places abstract notions of scientific advancement against the lives of real people. He's a good doc but there are better, more clinically focused people you can see. Stay if you want to be part of the big picture of science and research, go elsewhere if you desire a clinician undivided on his loyalties and in ethical conflict with his many duties.

i've been hiv since 1985 and have had many doctors. dr. jeff is the best one i have ever had out of all of them. he makes room for you when you need to see him, no long wait and treats me like a human not a plastic head. our appts. are at least 30 minutes long every time. he has even called me on a saturday to check in on me when i was having issues. i'm leaving oakland and the thing i will miss the most is my doctor. doctor jeffery burack. no one will be able to replace him.
