Dr. Jeffrey R Shapiro, DDS

My family has been seeing Dr. Shapiro and his colleagues for about seven years. He and his colleagues have been outstanding, and his staff are excellent and friendly. In particular, the office manager, Arlene, is a gem as is Veronica, who works alongside her. They've been especially helpful in calling to let me know when they can fit me into the schedule when they get a cancellation if I haven't been able to book an earlier appointment for non-urgent care. And they work with my insurance and submit the bills for me. Just two examples that show how much I admire and appreciate these dentists, regarding an extraction and root canal that were botched by other dentists and were salvaged by Dr. Shapiro's practice and the oral surgeon he referred me to, Barry Musikant. A dental student at NYU neglected to remove part of my tooth in during an extraction, which was overseen by a faculty member. I'd hoped to save money and the two visits, once for a consultation and the other for… the extraction cost about $120, if I remember correctly. I thought, how difficult can an extraction be? Obviously, the extraction demanded more expertise than I first realized. The extraction had to be completed by Dr. Shapiro's practice. Dr. Shapiro didn't scold me for going to a different dentist and was very understanding of the financial reasons (I'd recently lost a job). Dr. Shapiro also told me I didn't need a scaling when I asked after my husband had recently needed it. It means a lot that Dr. Shapiro didn't take advantage of my ignorance even though every small business wants to maximize income. As result, I didn't have to spend money on an unnecessary procedure. The other, even worse example of incompetence and in this second example, possibly malpractice, was a botched root canal by a senior faculty member of an NYU practice. His attitude was that I didn't know anything. He said to let him do the work and that he had many years of experience. It turned out he only removed three roots, and I happened to have five in the same tooth, which is rare. Again, Dr. Shapiro's practice came to the rescue and referred me Dr. Barry Musikant. It was Dr. Musikant who discovered I had five roots, and, congenial and kind throughout the entire ordeal (they gave me plenty of pain medication when I asked, but it was hard for me to keep my mouth open for such a long time). He devoted what must have been at least a couple hours, twice the time an ordinary root canal would have taken. I mentioned how much I appreciated his integrity and how thorough he was, and his attitude was, yes, it was a lot more work than he anticipated but it was part of the job. (He has many honors and awards and I believe has been president of a prestigious dental association.) He was very good natured about the situation and charged me only the rate we'd already established for an ordinary root canal. Thank you again to Dr. Shapiro and his wonderful colleagues and staff.
