Dr. Jeffrey R Klugman, MD

I was a teenager and saw him for bulimia. He decided I must have bipolar disorder (because bulimia = bipolar??) and prescribed me heavy duty medications for a 16-year-old. Medications that changed my personality, made it much harder to concentrate in school, and left me with gastroparesis. After missing only one appointment thanks to his own scheduling errors, he dropped me as a patient and I was forced to go off heavy duty medications cold turkey. That diagnosis stuck and I continued to seek other doctors to take those intense medications until I was 22 and better doctors realized that I was never bipolar. 20 years later, after having met people with bipolar disorder, I can’t fathom how he thought that was an accurate diagnosis. He caused me a lot of harm, and permanent damage to my stomach. I was reflecting recently on the damage he did to me, and I am shocked to see that he is still practicing, not only because of his age, but because there are many reviews of him on Google where… patients said the same thing. They were given intense medications, and he would drop them as patients, with no plans for them to safely wean off of these drugs. His medical license should be reviewed.

He doesn’t care. Every phone call he forgot what he had prescribed me, even told me he didn’t put me on a med he had prescribed me. Doesn’t work with insurance companies and fails to fill prescriptions. Worst doctor I’ve ever worked with.

Dr. Klugman has been my psychiatrist since the early 2000s. Please bear in mind that you are going to him for meds...not for "Therapy as usual." Of course he is a therapist too but I'm rating him as a medical doctor. It is only one part of the piece of recovery when you are prescribed medicine and you will probably need to find another therapist to work on your issues in-depth be that through CBT or DBT, etc. That goes without saying. I always know that when I meet with him that something will be accomplished and time will not be wasted. He's flexible with scheduling but you MUST keep your appointment or notify about rescheduling in 24 hours advance to be fair. If you'll work with him, he will do everything to help you that he can. I am miles better in my mental health thanks to a combination of mood stabilizers and anti-psychotics treating me for bipolar type 1. Meds alone do not cure, but they help you maintain mental wellness that you might not have without them. My quality of… life has improved from treatment and I'm not the only one who has noticed this in my circle.

Too quick to misdiagnose children as bipolar and drug the life out of them.

I first went to Dr. Klugman for depression as I was going through a divorce. I did not want to take medication at the time, so our visits were traditional talk therapy. Two years later, I remarried and had my first child, at which time I felt well enough to discontinue visits. However, my depression returned 15 years later, even worse than it was before. Realizing it was affecting my two children, I returned to Dr. Klugman's office. After he evaluated me for an hour to determine If I was experiencing depression or something else, he explained that patient visits no longer involved talk therapy; he prescribes suitable medication and follows up with regular visits to make adjustments, if necessary. That worked for me; I didn't want to talk; I just wanted to recover. Emotionally, I felt unsteady and vulnerable, but he came through for me. Several times, when something serious came up between appointments, we talked by phone or he scheduled an earlier appointment for me. I've been seeing… him for 20 years now, and I trust him completely.

I've been seeing Dr. Klugman for several years. I truly enjoy his compassion and humor each time I see him for a visit. He worked very carefully to help me make an important medication adjustment, as my husband and I are trying for a baby right now. He reassured me every step of the way, and I was able to successfully go off of a medication I'd been taking for over 18 years, when another doctor had tried and failed. We are very thankful for Dr. Klugman's patience and medical expertise going through this.

I have seen Dr. Klugman for at least the last 15 years and will happily continue to do so. I have never had a bad experience under his care and have always been able to access him outside of office hours when needed. I would highly recommend seeing Dr. Klugman if you are in need of a thorough and conscientious professional.

I have been seeing Dr. Klugman for over 10 years. He has been a kind, sympathetic, and wise counselor. I have never had a better doctor. And as a doctor myself, I can attest to these qualities with confidence.

Dr. Klugman has been a huge help over the past 13 years. He has brought me a long way from where I was, not only with medication accuracy, but also with one on one therapy. I would not change a thing. I find him very open minded, honest and realistic.
